Wouldn't take the films too seriously. I blame Danny Dyer. It was never one-on-one. 'Away Days' is ok if that kind of thing floats your boat.
Once slapped so hard by a fellow 6'+ footer, it was like being hit by a slab of slate. Funny enough, now good friends with him and his family. A midget came at me once and I thought 'is he going to try and head-butt me in the stomach'? Luckily enough, someone intervened and threw the hapless lad down the embankment into oncoming traffic.
As I've stated it's not a period of my life I cherish or am proud of. If you're ever bored in a library, 'Running With The Wolves' by Gilly Shaw says much. Lest we forget, many on that scene were far-right. We just did our own thing.
I am a lover, not a fighter, and peeps have way more respect for that.

Ah! Football.⚽ Those were the days 🙃 I'll investigate that book you mentioned. The best one I've read, which was free of all the macho bollocks, was 'The Boys From the Mersey' by Nicholas Allt. He tells it with humour and it's a good read.
If you're from North Wales, how did you end up with Wolves? 🐺 Wrexham will be passing them soon, with the investment they've had from Hollywood. 💰💰💰

Was on the door and on removal teams, worked in a psych ward for a stretch as well,
But most types of violence I’ve seen, heard, felt and had rained down on me,
stabbed
Bottled
Pool cue
Bar stool broke 3 ribs
Had 3 people try to be Michael Flatley on my head
Had to resuscitate people in serious trouble
held an 18 year old kids hand while he was dying
he got soccer punted in the head with steel capped boots hit his head so hard on the concrete the back of his head shattered
I’ve broken jaws and ribs and punched out teeth.
I used to think I was tough and now a days I just pity the person I was, all the things I missed because I was trying to be “The Man” I started writing when my bouncing days came to an end, got my license at 18, was running my own crew at 21 and hung up my number at 28
10 years of smelling like alcohol, cigarettes and blood

This is how 'tough' we were. Lol. Dancing, gesturing and posturing all safely hidden behind the Police. It was a European thing. Have been glassed, kicked unconscious in South London and a good friend was nearly fatally slashed by charming Evertonians (who used to bind 2 stanley knives together, so it was almost impossible to stich the wound).
As fiftysomethings we realise how pathetic it all was (slices of comedy) and anyways, given the rise in knife crime in the UK, you'd have to be mental to travel such paths. 13 year olds armed with a fleet of blades!

Totally respect and understand Tod. Violence is rubbish as you intimated, but we do, what we have to do.
We have a friend in his sixties who still considers himself a football hooligan. What the fuck! We laugh at him and long for the day some youngster nails him to the floor.
I was such an introverted and shy child, my beautiful Dad thought boxing lessons were a good idea. And to the surprise of a Nation was really handy. My right upper cut is fucking ferocious, but only had the displeasure to use it twice in 25 years. But don't talk to me about internet warriors hiding behind guns, they are the scum of this very scummy world.
It's been a genuine pleasure knowing you Tod (or as knowing as you can get on a poetry site). You've always been real.
