Hello all experienced and seasoned writers!
I've been wondering about poetry contests outside of DUP. How to tell what is legit and a scam. I would like to explore new areas or writing as well. So please any insight would be appreciated. What are your go to competition sites outside of DUP?!

THANK YOU!

For this side of the Atlantic (UK/Ire) contact this lady and request ‘free quarterly updates to poetry magazines submissions details’. Includes comp details too for both printed and online. She just loves encouraging writers. You will be expected to pay an entry free. As a rule of thumb, be wary of anything over £20 ($25?). And don’t be downhearted if you are unsuccessful, there are literally thousands & thousands of writers.

i subscribe to Duotrope. It's like $5 a month and you can include whatever search terms you want when looking for publication possibilities. I've found lots of opportunities there.

The general rule of thumb is, if they’re asking for money, the contest is a scam.

Have you entered many poetry competitions? Most ask for a reading fee. The reading fee pays the editors/judges and it is what makes up the prize. In the last month I have entered chapbook competitions for five different publishers and each one was a $25 fee. I submitted to Rattle literary magazine, The Tupelo press, the Missouri review, Finishing line press, and palette poetry. Not a scam.

If you’re seeking to publish a poem, and it’s not a competition, there may not be a reading fee, but lots of places do require a reading fee. OR they offer a reading fee free period once a year.
