I reject your if/then statement. By your logic, my options are either ignore it or live in fear.
I choose to do neither. I will continue to live my life (am about to jump over the side for my morning lap around the boat), but I will also be realistic, act for the benefit of my community, and try to help others.
Exactly. Just because we CHOOSE to care and think of others doesn't mean we're living in FEAR. It means being considerate and putting others before yourself.

Bingo.
I'm saying why not for the much greater constant risks? Only now? Why now?
12 to 24 million for Covid-19 vs 75 000 for the flu, in the US alone. There is no comparison.
I can not help you with your distrust of your government, as I live in a real democracy, with the lowest political corruption rates in the world, where the government, health system, welfare system and judiciary are almost completely free of self-interest. I think your mistrust of government is not helping you see beyond the borders of your country to a globally significant pandemic.
Comparisons to nazi Germany are lame...no one is packing people in to trains. They just want you to wash your hands, maintain some social distancing at stay at home for a bit....no gas chambers required.

Nope...we are equal , meaning if someone wants to be fearful ( whoever ) ,
that is their right to do so...they want to live in fear...same thing , their right...
If I choose not to be afraid , or to go outside , and enjoy nature , the sun ,
the forest , the sidewalks , or go to the store...my right...
And screw anyone who tries to stop me...that is how I believe...
If someone doesn't...their right , just do not get in my way...
Simple enough

This mindset, coupled with a piss poor social support system, broken politics, high debt and a substandard healthcare system is why I’m modelling US mortality rates to peak at 8-10 percent.
Right now in my country, on stage 2 alert, we have 50 cases and no deaths, because the government said “hey, there is this thing we need to control so our vulnerable people don’t die, so could you work from home, shop normally, tell your doctor if you feel sick, maintain social distancing, go outside for sure cos nature is great but follow basic hygiene steps. Emergency services and supermarkets are managing. We are financially robust and have started a stimulus package. If it gets worse we might have to do the following things XYZ. It would be great if you did your bit”. Then everyone in the country said “cool”, and we got on with it.
This big deal, well managed and with everyone doing their bit, is not a big deal :-)

Fundamental misunderstanding about the mortality rate of Covid-19 vs usual flus.
At 4% mortality rate, which is low if entire population gets sick at same time, 12 million people will die in the US. The mortality rate runs at 8% right now in Italy.
I understand this. I guess I was looking at it less from a statistics standpoint and more of a value of life standpoint.

Yep.
The whole point of making a big out of something is so that it doesn't become one.

And *that* is great , for your "country" and location , and populace...
What was your population where you are ?
Here , they are trying to clamp everything down , much different from
your reality...so , a number of us refuse , and rebel , because it is our innate right...
I respect others right to stay inside...I am not going to go to their house and drag them out...;)
Yet it must be a matter of choice...no one owns me...
Hell , I voted once in all my adult years...because I realized those elected thought they owned
you , and could tell you what to do...no one *owns* me...I will do what I want , when I want...
Always doing my best to respect others , though not giving up my rights...

Just learned my great niece and her husband are infected.
Thankfully they had the common sense to cancel last week's visit to her copd emphysema riddled grandmother.

The Value Of Life Is Freedom
Depending on which culture you live in. In Samoa the value of life is family, and they are cool with being asked to wash their hands and not hang out in big groups.
In China a valuable life has historically been measured by your value to the country (communist era really, but strongly prevalent before then, which explains why some elements of modern China were around since before the pyramids were built)
In bush tribes in Australia a good life is/was defined by whether you were good to trees or not.
Run whatever filters you want....just wash your hands and stay a couple of feet away from people for a bit.
This doesn’t have to be a flag waving chest beating freedom costs a buck ninety five moment. Its just about doing your little bit to help lessen the harm caused by a virus....

Hey man, tough news, but also great example of your people doing the right thing. Go them!
( I’ve got a mate with emphysema and he won’t survive this if he gets it....I visited him last week and he made me do a full scrub at the bottom of his stairs before I came up, and it was a privilege, as no one else is allowed near him :-)
