Poetry Contest

How shall we end 2018?
Greetings, Fellow Poets!  It's time for our "Poem of the Month" to be featured in the DUP 'Poem of the Month Hall of Fame' and on the official facebook page for December, 2018.

You have three weeks to nominate no more than two of you favorite poems from another DUP poet!

Please note the following when making nominations:

1. Self nominations are not accepted. The great majority of the competitions here are about spotlighting one's own work on a particular topic or theme.  This is a chance to nominate that poem that you wish you had written but some other great talent here beat you to it.

2. Please limit your nominations to TWO poems. You can nominate a single poem for two different poets; but the nomination maximum remains at TWO (no matter how many pseudonyms they have).  The majority of competitions on DUP cap nominations at one or two poems so there's no need to go beyond that.

No DUPLICATES. If someone nominates the same poem the entry will be deleted. If you like it that much wait and vote for it!

Any genre except erotica or pornography. This is a Facebook feature and we must adhere to their guidelines.

BIG CHANGE:

Previous Poem of the Month Hall of Fame members CAN BE NOMINATED ... but a poet may only win once in the time period from November 2017 - December 2018.

Simply put: We want to see a cross section of writers acknowledged.

Any member who is banned or disables their account PRIOR to the win will be automatically disqualified.

Any nominated member who wishes to opt out of the competition may do so by messaging me ( Poem-Worm ). I will contact the person who nominated you and request an alternate nomination.

Nomination Duration is three weeks followed by a week of site voting!

Nothing But Words

Sometimes words just aren't enough
to capture all of the magic that surrounds
the spill of the rainbow after a good storm
the twinkles that resound from a caring eye
the lick of the lips before that first kiss

resplendent, sumptuous, beheld
my mind wanders the forest that is me
searching for what now remains
the faults and the fissures
the fallen, and the free

the leaves fall one by one
opulent amber hues abound
ne'er is there a sound

no words but the beauty still exists

there's a rustle in the air
the bark begins to bleed
will the words spill out and breathe

I hesitate,
a chestnut gallops by
smiles and winks her eye

the words now come
flowing with matchless grace
stunning, wondrous, sweet
adorning a remarkable face

The Tree Of We

A little of each of us
runs through all of us

Yet some chose or abuse
what time has infused
opting instead their
ancestry refused

Not of my gender
not of my faith.
not of my country
nor even my race

connections much deeper
than eyes ever see
part of me you
part of you me

for DNA proves
we all were the same
long before thoughts
gave each different names

born of one woman
the seed of one man
scattered to dwell
in far reaching lands

and it can't but be known
their faces in scowl
heads bowed in sorrow
our actions so foul

how to our kin
the treatment we give
love we have lost
through time like a sieve

Tears fill my eyes
as these words do arrive
for how can we ever
feel we're alive.

Soup & A Sandwich.......70 yrs in the making

Two things occurred recently which brought some thoughts.

As I was shopping for groceries from a list I'd written
I came upon '2 tomorrow soup', and as I normally write
my lists in abbreviated fashion it struck me as peculiar,
for I'd written not only an entire word, but also the wrong word,
knowing it should have read '2 tom. (tomato) soup'.

Later that evening I prepared a light dinner comprised of
the aforementioned 'tomorrow soup' and a patty melt with all
the trimmings. After eating half my meal, as I watched television,
I noticed the sandwich tasted somewhat bland, missing the
flavor I had anticipated. Further investigation revealed the
sandwich was patty-less, thus reducing it to a vegan melt.
My husband and I joked about my forgetfulness in
leaving the patty off, however the fact I had eaten half
before realizing it, began my pondering of the two events.

a sun that dips beyond my sight
leaves darkness in it's wake
It's not the dying of the light
death's always been my fate

is this how it will begin
thoughts missing from my head
are these things, the sum of years
results that I should dread

I've chosen to accept the fact
that time does take it's toll
forgo all thought to launch attack
let age not be my goal

if so, the descent won't be quick
within my waning years
more as a clock hand by the click
let this not be my fears

should concern be more in how
and lesser of the when
will my final thoughts be now
leave time up to the wind

"Do not go gentle into that good night"

for some their way to leave
raging, raging to hold the light
is not my wish to be

calm, quiet, and accepting
the route I've sought to take
and knowing that I have  your blessing
,...…..the icing on my cake.

Mysticism 101d- Getting Out of Your Own Head

It’s no easy task
To get out
Of your own head
But if you
Sit with your
Thoughts long
Enough
They eventually
Learn to
Quiet themselves.

The Path

Life is one big adventure,
Just one chance to make it right
To love, to be happy, to live
Destinations always unknown
It branches this way and then that,
In a million different directions
Where do you go? How do you know?

Some paths are solid
The ground is level and stable,
You trust your footing,
Your gut says all is good,
Safety ahead
Yet it drops you straight into hell

Some are crooked and unsteady,
A path of darkness
So you fear where they may lead
Danger signs are everywhere,
Proceed with caution
All you feared becomes a stairway,
Heaven bound all along.

Lead me on the path straight to you
Tell me. Give some sort of sign.
Whoever you may be.
You must be waiting,
Somewhere out there
Wanting and willing,
Craving, Wishing, Desiring...

A mirror image of yourself ,
A heart and soul the same
Somewhere out there...

The Flowers That I Carry

Deep in every fiber of my being lays tragedy;
Hopes and dreams to never be,
Lost and withered without a choice
Passions stripped away,
In the blink of an eye
Life turned upside down,
Left in feelings turned inside out
A lifetime of loss to bare,
Created perfectly in a wake of disaster,
The gift that keeps giving
These are the flowers that I carry
Ones of tragedy though courage,
It has built upon my soul
I wear them as my armor,
Against the fear of my future
I use them as an anchor,
As I wade the deep sea of fear
Keeping myself grounded in peace,
A strong woman have I become
As I face life bravely in the eye,
Without a choice or say
Going forward in strength and resilience,
A calm that tragedy can so forth create
As I exist with daily reminders,
A perfectly imperfect creation I've become
As these are the flowers that I carry

Let myself go

I'm trying to see the sky,
but the view of the syringe
is blocking my sight

Nothing but pain,
can't feel the rain,
barely remember who i am

What if i die,
no one will cry,
no one to bury my bones

So here we go again,
let the powder burn,
watch it simmer 'till the end

Pull all the way back,
it keeps pushing me off track

Let the needle pierce my arm,
it flows inside,
tears me apart

I slowly close my eyes
feeling more and more cold,
slowly fade away
and the Reaper guides my soul...

The bell jar speaks: chapter 1 #2

Blink and these prison bars melt
as buttered flesh in the oven.
endless skyscrapers with windows
waitresses and help wanted ads

sucking the life from our eye sockets,
headcheese for the brave at heart.
taking claw hammers to the night sky,
stars were rusty bent nail heads

pouring kerosene on my best black suits and your fur wardrobe,
we watched it all burn
as Tartini's Violin Sonata in G minor
trilled in the background.

Fever-Dream

I wanted something profound to say
about the wilderness we walked
crooked as snakes.
something in your vicious fang
and the orchards’ fruit;
some deep truth feeding the garden
like subterranean creeks
nourishing the thicket hiding
our joint fever-dream.

Like all carnage, ours was empty.
Dreams forgotten on waking,
all pumping earth awaiting collapse,
hollow fruit.
We were animals basking in
idiot nature, drunken meanings,
howling at nothing.
