Poetry Contest

Nominate the best of best in your eyes
Greetings, Fellow Poets!  It's time for our "Poem of the Month" to be featured in the DUP 'Poem of the Month Hall of Fame' and on the official facebook page for March 2018.

You have three weeks to nominate no more than two of you favorite poems from another DUP poet!

Please note the following when making nominations:

1. Self nominations are not accepted. The great majority of the competitions here are about spotlighting one's own work on a particular topic or theme.  This is a chance to nominate that poem that you wish you had written but some other great talent here beat you to it.

2. Please limit your nominations to TWO poems. You can nominate a single poem for two different poets; but the nomination maximum remains at TWO per nominee (no matter how many pseudonyms they have)  The majority of competitions on DUP cap nominations at one or two poems so there's no need to go beyond that.

No DUPLICATES. If someone nominates the same poem the entry will be deleted. If you like it that much wait and vote for it!

Any genre except erotica or pornography. This is a Facebook feature and we must adhere to their guidelines.

BIG CHANGE:

Previous Poem of the Month Hall of Fame members CAN BE NOMINATED ... but a poet may only win once in the time period from November 2017 - December 2018.

Simply put: We want to see a cross section of writers acknowledged.

Any member who is banned or disables their account PRIOR to the win will be automatically disqualified.

Any nominated member who wishes to opt out of the competition may do so by messaging me ( Poem-Worm ). I will contact the person who nominated you and request an alternate nomination.

Nomination Duration is three weeks followed by a week of site voting!

Running list of winners:

November 2017 ... NAAJIR
December 2017 ... POETSPEAK

May 2018
June 2018
July 2018

sandman cry boy

what is unreal

this feeling
unmade

banished dreams
crying out their little bloody eyes
weeping hollow
inside my chest

what is heart ache
sired by desert seas

chained dead weight
hunted by dunes
devoured swiftly
in sand trap silence

my expendable love

the opposite of ghosts

aloof as moon awaiting dawn
eyes linger on electric waves
mirages on the ceiling tiles
our measured breath-fall keeping time

eyes linger on electric waves
the press of you the weight of years
our measured breath-fall keeping time
your soul and spirit’s loss of me

the press of you the weight of years
the mem’ry of your every dance
your soul and spirit's loss of me
the trappings of a happy life

the mem’ry of your every dance
the joy we sold for pretty things
the trappings of a happy life
and now remain as empty shells

the joy we sold for pretty things
we spent our love in prophets’ waste
and now remain as empty shells
become the opposite of ghosts

we spent our love in prophets’ waste
mirages on the ceiling tiles
become the opposite of ghosts
aloof as moon awaiting dawn

Those Places

Do you know those places?
Where the nights are still
and undisturbed by vulgar urban traffic

Do you know those places?
Where the skies are dark
on cloudy nights
only illuminated by the handheld lamp
of a woman walking from
one room to another

Those Places
Where the grasses glow
different shades of lime
in devotion to the moon and stars
on clear nights

Where lakes attempt to recreate the past
like Gatsby, by reflecting
light emitted by constellations
that exploded in spectacular supernovas
centuries ago

You do know those places
Where the buck grazes in tranquility
uninterrupted by the intruding tourist
where the distant city whistles and hollers
cannot rudely awaken
the dreaming antelope

You have seen those places
Where lost love is forgotten
and new curiosities are aroused
Where our flaws face the facts
and characters are re-assessed
Where the indiscernible rhythms
of nature's instinctive tunes
beget new acquaintanceships
and journey upon untrodden landscapes

Those Places
Where cacophonic chatter
morphs into complex drum patterns
that act as the beat
to the melodic inceptions
of curious relations

Where incessant uproar
is the equivalent of young virgins
singing to birth of a new empire

You remember that Place
Where the strumming of guitars
and the tapping of feet
kissed to signify
the beautiful bonding
of music and dance
to form immortal melancholy memories

Yes, Those Places
Where the rivers are deep
and the lakes vast
The waters are murky
and the currents heavy

Where life is stripped
of its societal pretence
and moral oxymorons
Where character is left
bare as the wild beasts
and aquatic fantasies

Those very Places
Where adolescents dream
and the future is born
