Counting Mississippi’s
Lightning.
Count ~
one Mississippi
two Mississippi
three Mississippi.
Thunder.
Three miles at least,
my mom declares,
smiling down at me.
I’m still afraid, though.
How can she know
the mind of the storm?
Maybe Mother Earth
has finally had enough of us,
with our wasting and killing
and our race to consume.
Maybe it’s just a storm,
she says confidently,
smile never wavering.
The sun will come out again,
you’ll see.
Lightning.

I set off into the sea
To see a real part of me
Winds start picking up
Sails are swept under and above
White crest of ocean
Mixed with jagged rocks
Think I can ride out the storm of me
