Walk around think I know it all
If I don’t I’ll look it up
Parents know nothing
Tell me what to do
God forbid say the wrong thing
Child chastising
Knowing in a piece of technology
Know nothing about being real
Pick em up put em in
Phone is out as soon as she’s in
Silence in the chamber
She saw something she wanted
Syllables leave her tongue
Don’t know who she is
Stranger in my life
How is this that
Walk with her pick a flower
Now she runs...
Walk around think I know it all
If I don’t I’ll look it up
Parents know nothing
Tell me what to do
God forbid say the wrong thing
Child chastising
Knowing in a piece of technology
Know nothing about being real
Pick em up put em in
Phone is out as soon as she’s in
Silence in the chamber
She saw something she wanted
Syllables leave her tongue
Don’t know who she is
Stranger in my life
How is this that
Walk with her pick a flower
Now she runs...

I Still Don't Like Kerouac, Papa
When your father dies of an opioid overdose,
your stepmother will call
at 1:27pm on a gray and freezing January afternoon.
She can't articulate much of anything,
or you can't hear much of anything
or all words are caught and suffocated into a quantum vortex
because you can't remember being told
"your father is dead, and he died from an opiate overdose,"
you only remember suddenly knowing, as the truth
rises from its depression cave
stretches its long limbs,
complains about its back,
puts on thermal long johns, ...

My father’s grief
He wears a smile on his face
And works almost every day
He stays up late
Will often go outside to rake
The leaves out of the yard
I mentioned the missing tombstone
But all I get is a reply
That says next time
My father’s grief
Hides itself well
I often wish it would come out of its shell
If not sadness then at least shed a tear
So his health I won’t fear
My father’s grief is locked away in a shell
No one knows when it comes out
I wish it was loud
And works almost every day
He stays up late
Will often go outside to rake
The leaves out of the yard
I mentioned the missing tombstone
But all I get is a reply

I Am Your Father And What I Say Goes
You
are not
going to
do this ever
again! I am your
father and what I say
goes! I mean it! No daughter
of mine is ever going to
flash her goodies in some skin mag no
matter how much money they're paying her!

The Gift Of Having You
Whom would I first address
and my veneration would express
The one who patiently me nursed
and who rendered me well versed
Shall I name who embraced my first cry
whole nights with no blink of an eye
Shall I cite who sweated blood to meet my breeding
whole days out burning to earn my feeding
Two dear familiar faces my first sight
growing with memories in my heart so bright
Mum and Dad for me you are the one
my first and only, second to none
The gift of having you long for granted taken
the evidence of losing you woe waken ...

The Modelos are Nice and Cold
My pops always seemed to be the life of the party
A strong booming voice that could fill the room
He had a hardy laugh like he heard the funniest thing
And he could drink hard like he was in a saloon
And when the cumbias came on the speakers
He’d hit the floor and dance like nobody’s business
He’d have fun because he loved the ambiance
From birthdays and picnics all the way to Christmas
At the stadium we would sit and drink in the stands
He’d tell me stories when he used to play the game
There was a sense of mystery...

Ofrenda
My father’s ashes sit on my sister’s windowsill
Along with other family members overlooking the yard
And whenever I visit on festive occasions
I make sure I have a drink
With a slight nod and toast to him
In honor of his memory
So I think…
Maybe when my time comes
And my kids and grandkids put my picture out
I’d want them to remember our times
As they read some of my poetry
Giggling while reading them rhymes
Then I’ll come across the bridge
Smelling the food and hearing them laugh
And I’ll say - laugh because...

You say you won’t be like Daddy
So you say you won’t be like daddy
Mirror turns I look like him
I cursed him every day
When he went away
I love him to this day
But I’m too much like him
In the bottom of a bottle
That’s where we connect
Swimming in my sins
Swimming in red wine
I don’t want to be like him
And I wake up staring at me
Have to break this cycle
For I don’t want to pass this onto
My little champion he looks like me but
I don’t want him to be anything like me
Especially in...

The Girl Inside of Her
That little girl is still inside of her,
still needing the touch of affection
from a father distracted by his own desire.
Wooing her, I hoped that I might be
a portion of her father, letting her know
she is a wonderful young woman, unique in her beauty.
But when I entered her, I did not enter
as a father but as a man consumed with lust.
She must have sensed my hunger.
At the moment of my coming, she gasped.
Her her eyes held tears at their edge.
Did she cry because of the loss
of innocence or because the desires...

Seventy-Seventh Birthday
In July of 2013, you died and you went to Heaven.
If you hadn't died, today you would've turned 77.
After taking chemotherapy for months, you died.
You were a great provider and that can't be denied.
When a parent dies, it's always tragic and very sad.
If you were still alive, I'd say "Happy Birthday, Dad".

slight change of plans...
we had a plan
reservations made
in the works for months
bringing your sweetie to you
she made a bucket list
& you were at the top
a homecoming...of sorts
revisit all the old haunts
going to Morey's & get your favorite fish
those special cheeses you always used to get
A&W with New York Vanilla ice cream floats
just like the old days...in better times
before everything changed in life
we were coming...I swear
but the universe had other ideas
so we had to pivot quickly

These words
My dad was once
He is no more
I never heard
These words before
I love you son
Come hold my hand
When all is done
I'll understand
When I am gone
So far away
Just think of these
Words I would say
I love you son
Come hold my hand
When all is done
I'll understand.
He is no more
I never heard
These words before
I love you son
Come hold my hand
When all is done
