Thoughts of August
Looking out the window and staring at my thoughts as the teacher mumbles something about Mitochondria. Why can't I find a desk that does not have gum attached to the bottom of it?
As I try to concentrate on the teacher it hits me like a ton of bricks - we need milk at home. My teacher is now talking about the nucleus of the cell and it is not lost on me that this class feels like a different kind of cell.I think the board of education should introduce my xbox as part of the curriculum. i could probably pass that class with a solid B+.

Flawed Beauty
Though my legs are paralyzed
I traveled the seven seas
On a quest in search for Atlantis
I climbed high mountains and
Roamed vast deserts to find my treasure
Accompanied by Peruvian shamans
I drank Ayahuasca
Supported by a wolf pack
I survived atomic winter.
I am a reader!
I had tea with fairies and plant devas
Talked to friendly beings in faraway galaxies
Embarked on adventurous journeys
On the back of my unicorn
I listened to the messages
The rustling autumn leaves
Whispered into my ear

Unmoving
Stone form,
The cement set,
Trapped under its weight.
Wasted body,
Frozen in state.
Fiery core,
A raging torrent,
Wild in its passion.
Unbridled spirit,
Caged by fate.
Broken bonds,
A finger's twitch,
Electric in its potential.
Voice unheard,
Hushed by time.
Absolute stillness,
A certain grace,
Cruel in its finality.
Life abridged,
Stolen in prime.
The cement set,
Trapped under its weight.
Wasted body,
Frozen in state.

The saviour my ventilator
A regular pattern of breaths keeping.
Me alive and healthy while also.
Constraining my speech. I.
Must obey this rhythm or.
Die. I've forgotten how it.
Used to be when I.
Could still breathe by myself.
It was so much simpler.
I didn't have to worry about.
Random tube disconnects.
And circuit malfunctions.
Now I can.
Never be alone.
Even with someone.
Next door with a baby.
Monitor I feel.
On edge. It's amazing.
I can still feel lonely with.
So many people around.
But I do...

Andrew Goes to Knotts
I heard Andrew went to Knotts Berry Farm
Saw pictures of him just the other day
Would he be able to ride the roller coasters?
You bet, nothing is going to get in his way
Never underestimate the little guy
I’ve never seen a place roar with great laughter
When one night I saw him ride a mechanical bull
Telling his dad and grandpa, faster, FASTER!
And now he’s out on his first great big outing
Bright smiles all around under the summer sun
And on the rides I bet there was a lot of shouting
Making delightful memories having so much...

Heroes Are Made Not Born
The Truth is I am more disabled than him
When the world hears the name Mak Manaka
His work speaks for itself
When the world hears the name Simphiwe Mhlongo
There is silence in the room
Nobody knows who he is
Sometimes his own mother forgets that he’s even around
As she hears those footsteps she fears an unwelcome intruder
Only to realise that her son is the unfortunate surprise
Whose entrance into her space brings panic and sudden worry
It is a glaring reminder of a distance covered but whose end
May never be reached

Hee Haw!
Guns, gasoline, and their subsequent stink,
By bad aroma signal evil traits...
Loved only by hearts just as dark as ink
And thrice uncouth in their doltish debates
Where Texas Tea stains an aquifer,
As if an automobile could vote,
Not caring where the fracking cracks occur
When ethics are learned by religious rote.
Yes, somebody somewhere thinks it's okay
To fuck up the planet for a dollar
And object to anything in his way
Due to all the crude in his heinous choler...
But your thoughts may be as well disrupted
If your brain too...

The choice
Once upon a time, my child asked me:
if you could get rid of your chronic pain condition
or your mental illness, which would you pick?
I was taken aback;
it's not a choice anybody gets to make.
After very much thought,
I told her neither;
for both have made me
the person I am today,
taught me resilience,
determination, and flexibility—
as in, different ways of doing things,
and not the kind of flexibility
that comes from having EDS!
Much later on, I've changed my mind;
decided that one adds nothing,
aside...

New Shoes
I never had much interest
in clothes or shoes,
though I did have a passing interest
in earrings and hair accessories.
Nowadays, I think I would like
to shop for a pair of shoes.
It's been many years since I did,
for shoes have become a symbol
of what I can no longer have.
Booted and braced and insole-d,
I'm grateful that I can walk
short distances on flat terrain.
Foiled by lack of cashflow,
footwear rarely requires much thought—
the same pair of Clark's size 5½ ankle boots
have adorned my feet...

Lovenox Shots
The number of purple green galaxies are lower
Than the many days before this one
Patchwork colors across my stomach
You can see the blooming red underneath
Pressure points their hands brush against
When they hug me in the late of night
Lily pads of pain printed on skin
Drawn with a single needle prick
The match the brushes of colors of the sky
After the angriest of storms
Than the many days before this one
Patchwork colors across my stomach
You can see the blooming red underneath
Pressure points their hands brush against
