Desert
It is so easy to get lost
lose one's self
high upon the shelf
of a red striated mesa
Yet the absence of sound
the stillness of the ground
still so soothes
with all of its grooves
While my memory of rain
like some phantom pain
still lingers
still echoes
Especially when the wind blows
spreading its lonely lies
all disguised as sighs
strewn now about
Fostering such doubt
about the nature of things
the things of nature ...
lose one's self
high upon the shelf
of a red striated mesa
Yet the absence of sound
the stillness of the ground
still so soothes
with all of its grooves
While my memory of rain
like some phantom pain
still lingers
still echoes
Especially when the wind blows
spreading its lonely lies
all disguised as sighs
strewn now about
Fostering such doubt
about the nature of things
the things of nature ...

Rain fills the desert
Whose years of tightly held salt
Bloom to the surface
SALT FLOWERS
Whose years of tightly held salt
Bloom to the surface
SALT FLOWERS

The camels humps
The Camels Humps
Distain for humans is quite plain,
you’re welcome, a vile of spit.
Perceive, our hollow core, devoid of wit,
for all you see is a cartoon,
the bony knees a broad mid-drift,
and on its back two balloons,
For you to travel on the dunes
so graceful in its gait.
To rise the crest, where trucks are stuck,
pass onward with a haughty gaze
and forward stride. hoofmarks plain
no shield from sun, on wrinkled skin,
Just sand on sand, the whole terrain
Brave ship to carry homosapien,
the double eyelid...

Grains of Sand
Grains of sand
slip through my hand
blown in a fickle breeze
across the open desert
that is my life
Scattering
Shattering my illusions
jumping to conclusions
no longer held
no longer believed
for a life left now bereaved
slip through my hand
blown in a fickle breeze
across the open desert
that is my life
Scattering
Shattering my illusions
jumping to conclusions
no longer held
no longer believed

Cacti
Together they stand alone
in the desert sun
each and every one
hiding a desire
This deep inner fire
that burns
as each learns
solitude
Hours in a scalding sun
dignifies
clarifies
the meaning of the moment
Separate and distinct
poignant and succinct
as the hours expire
as the day drones on
Till temporality is gone
replaced only by the now
how it does forever show
the modernity of eternity
in the desert sun
each and every one
hiding a desire
This deep inner fire
that burns
as each learns

Concrete Grass
We are not going green
Only grey
Dress it up with graffiti called art
It's still lipstick on rubble
Whole neighborhoods cover the fields
Swallowing quaint towns
And old men with stubble
Even the green remaining requires shoes
Needles, and perfecting pesticides
Children laughing
Using chalk in a concrete bubble
A lucky few still skip out the front door
Blades between toes
But tax coffers echo
As mayors longingly stare at them
Through their Hubble
"So long!", Progress laughs
Corn...

The Joshua Tree
I wander out far
to the Joshua Tree
in order to find
what I left behind
Even though
I did not go
this way
on this or any other day
Faith is like this
with her blissful kiss
that I can only imagine
how it would feel
If I could steal
rapture
somehow be able to capture
this feeling forever
Be able to weather
the desert of despair
the dark night of the soul
only to reemerge whole
to the Joshua Tree
in order to find
what I left behind
Even though
I did not go

Faith is like this
with her blissful kiss
that I can only imagine
how it would feel

[Desert Sands Lie Still]
Desert sands lie still
cool under the starless sky
until the sharp sting
cool under the starless sky
until the sharp sting

Drought
each
breath
desiccating
dry
hot
dusty
whirlwinds
lift debris
swirling
upward to
where?
heaven? oz? kansas?
existential
thirst
yearning for
torrents
and
petrichor
white
puffs
form
on horizon
virgae
tease
moisture disappeared
before
reaching earth
leaving only
wind heat
lust and
mother
nature
laughing

Deserting
I always seem to find my best self
when I am here
when no one else near
walking on ruddy burning sands
Embracing my own
wilderness
wildness
for more than forty days
Rediscovering myself in ways
never before imagined
discovering new facets
pyrite shimmering in the sun
Studying each one
up close
feeling its smooth face
recalling this solemn place
How here there is finally enough
elbow room
for me to fully bloom
unstifled by cracked concrete slabs
when I am here
when no one else near
walking on ruddy burning sands
Embracing my own
wilderness
wildness
for more than forty days
Rediscovering myself in ways
never before imagined
discovering new facets
pyrite shimmering in the sun
Studying each one

How here there is finally enough

for me to fully bloom
unstifled by cracked concrete slabs

Vestigial
I found your bones under the desert’s sands;
Rocked your frigid crib to stir a green soul.
Mouthy vacuous heads led to cracked hands,
Cackled and crowed over the flesh they stole.
The nomad with shale-grit eyes drifts the wind
Here to there, beyond the noise and inside;
Savage memento to the spines they’ve skinned,
A grave with dear trinkets to lie beside.
Skin pushes over limbs to drown you out,
Follicles and remnants of pride tumble;
Reversed a flower from the tomb anew.
They scratch for water after bringing drought,
Crawl,...

Taos
I had sojourned to New Mexico
many times before.
Visited Albuquerque
Santa Fe;
but never made the trip
the sacred pilgrimage
to finally Alpine ski here.
Till now.
Staying on the bald mountain
clinging to the slope
feeling the powdery hope
of the new fallen snow.
As I sit in the village square
totally aware
of the sorcery of this winter.
How it makes my thoughts splinter ...
