Desert Rose
Sandy, dry, desert,
Water gone, minerals form
Tan and rust roses.
Water gone, minerals form
Tan and rust roses.

I Lived High Summer on Those Chaparrals – Sonnet Sixty-One
I lived high summer on those chaparrals,
With country music, beer, and leather work.
In downing sun of coy-otes’ casting spells
Of life less lived, the concrete stall berserks.
In Joshuas and prairie sage consoles,
Of hoofs that slowly pick their mountain sides,
The dust and scrub in lonely fence patrols,
Where purpose and my lonely God reside.
How far and near that other self still haunts,
That peopled place I never knew as home,
That land of stolen dreams and nonchalance,
That bled my soul to exile desert roam.

tango in the sky
the lonely wind searched for a mate
he stirred the grass but she was mated to the earth
caressed the mountaintops she the sky
he blew through the trees rustling the leaves
but the trees were solitary creatures
denizens charged to watch over the land of mortal men
the sky watched the lonesome wind blow through the canyons
pushing the river forward across little pebbles in the river beds
with a heavy sadness, he realized the river was married to the rocks
finally, he blew over the parched desert lands
stirring dust...

Love is a Ghost
Love is a ghost, flitting across my view.
It appears in the window, then disappears,
And the room is left empty and dark though you chase
That ghost, ever travelling, in search of a host.
You find the spark in a pair of eyes
For a little while ’til the bright star dies,
For its lifespan is timed. But you go on,
Alone in the desert for a thousand miles.
Then the story ends and your heart forgets.
You’re in a new land and you ask yourself,
“Whyever did I ever fret?”
The chances you find are infinite.
“You” are new, the past forms...

Deadication
There was a poet walking through the sand,
And he didn’t know it, but there were eyes on his footprints.
As he walked along there appeared a man.
The man he spoke of a world of fortune and asked…
Do you have anything to give?

Sand Seeking
Stumbling, staggering
ever onwards on endless sand
an infinite stretching sea of sand
as far as the eye can see,
sand, always sand,
a detestable desert
where wearied walks
make little footprints
in the sand,
travellers seeking a hand
upon the desiccated sand
a hand in inspiration,
dried up and dried out
of ideas
no new pieces
so no new peace
upon the hot sand,
enough to drive anyone mad,
sand, sand, as far as the eye can see;
seek and ye shall find,
sand and signs
empty lands for empty...

Out Here on the Perimeter
(a quatern)
In shade of rubber burned from L.A. streets,
The chants arise of seven-mi'le snakes,
Of native graves and blood, Mojave’s heat
At Lizard King’s arrive, as Whiskey shakes.
A Venice road that bleats up Valley skirts,
In shade of rubber burned from L.A. streets,
That women/girls arouse, though eyes avert
To find their maps on thrusts of roadhouse sheets.
In little drinks that taste of winds’ conceits,
In backdoor rhymes that call the wounded heart,
In shade of rubber burned from L.A. streets,
Elab’rate plans that...

all there is
is dirt
flowers cannot blossom
on parched, aching ground
they cry for salvation
shriveled petals shrink
and dream of sweet droplets to quench their thirst
alas, under a scorching desert sun

Mystical Desert Dunes
Swimming through the sand, surface in a haze,
shake the people's heads, thank them for taking space
remembering your face.
Forgive them if they can't recall...anything you said.
,~o~'
I will mark this as the day I first would learn to see,
since a youth I always knew the truth would set me free.
Journey through the desert, stab a cactus for a drink,
eat the seeds of mystics, put a twist on how you think.
Hit your knees and beg a deity for rain,
gather every tear she bleeds and wash away the...
