Desert Quest
ahead,
elongated shadows of setting sun,
trail covered by eons of blown dust.
beneath my feet,
ancient footprints in desert sand,
evidence of those who came before.
around,
harsh desiccated landscape
of indescribable beauty.
spiked branches, sparse foliage
twisted contorted cacti
forbidding yet inviting.
dust devils swirling,
randomly blending
earth and air.
confident strides
leading farther from the known,
closer to the divine,
into unknown hardship,
unintended...

the absolute is not there
the inconsistencies also do not
not even the most microscopic of faults
the tremor of the earth is not felt
and the wind, where did the wind go, in silence?
the sound of the waves fell silent on the rocks
the stillness of the rocks shook the sands
and the desert turned sour under the sun
and the voice, where did the voice go, screaming?
the color of things is not there
the scars are not there either
but the scream is the sound of everything that moves
the infinitesimal of calculations was...

Dreaming Desert
bolting storm.
night defined
by flashes of insight.
truth seems capricious.
is it something else
to honeybee or coyote?
fulfilling, foreboding
or light in flight,
like fairies dusting blue sky.
fact becomes fiction,
fantasy masquerades
as thundering reality.
beneath gray clouds,
realities fade
silently screaming.
unbidden truths
capriciously
lying in wait.

Dust
The flowers are beautiful and they die
human beings are not beautiful
but they die anyway!
The flowers turn to dust.
Humans turn to dust.
I love the smell of flowers
but I'm allergic to dust.
I'm allergic to humans.
But if one day I return from the dust,
I would love for it to be in the form
of a dusty desert flower!

surviving

dusty windy desiccated
searing heat
freezing cold
sporadic drowning
protected by
deep roots waxy coat
piercing spines
each occupies
its own space
not encroaching
briefly
flowering then
fruiting
utilizing
scarce resources
to provide
beauty
and
sweet nourishment
to feathered
and furred
survivors

The Straw Hat Photo
a photo I like
is from late afternoon
of the day I met him
He was already gone by then
for over two years it turned out
but that afternoon
I would be seeing him again
in just a few days
New to the Southwest
the first of two times
I was wearing a silly straw hat
oversized sunglasses
a denim skirt above my knees.
I met him by the mailboxes
got in his car
guided him to the house
What I like about the photo
is my simple shadow
the rough asphalt
a crack in the canvas

Autumn in Phoenix
Vibrant reds and yellows
swaths of orange
streak the sky
in a valley of millions
sunset air pollution
at least its pretty
brisk breezes of Fall
crisp red apples
earthy cider wafts
of cloves and cinnamon
hay rides under warm blankets
seasonal pleasures
enjoyed by those further north
glad at least some get to experience them
this time of year
is an arborial fashion show
change in the air
the promise of snow
but not here

A Man You Ought to Love
The Buddha’s known
as “the compassionate”.
But why?
For this::
Not only did he see
with overwhelming empathy
Man’s dire need to be
released from fated suffering
but kindly taught “him” how
this could be done
successfully.
and thereby caused
his being praised,
extolled, and justly so,
by high and low
as one
who was (and is)
deserving to be loved.
as “the compassionate”.
But why?
For this::

Beauty and Bewilderment
The most intense landscape
swallowed in the sweltering sun,
the desert screams in silence.
Sandstorms sprouting and small houses in the distance,
this land of dust and heat demands the strongest will to survive.
On this path you will meet the kindest and most resilient of beings
seeing life from an ancient but timeless perspective.
Determined and confident in each moment of uncertainty
is what you must be in this most unforgiving of environments.
Surrounding mountains sheltered in the shade of the clouds.
Beyond the brutality...

then I spiked my horse with spurs
and disappeared into the radiance of the desert...
