(Ghost) Stories
They say there’s a monster in these woods,
They say it looks through windows and leaves footprints on porch steps.
They say it was once a man who went into the woods searching for his wife.
They say it was once a woman who died in the streets with red on her breast and her lips.
It was once
A king,
An athlete,
A poet,
A teacher,
A mother,
A father,
A peasant,
A slave,
A man,
A woman.
It was a child in its mothers arms,
It was the mother looking down at her child.
It was bleeding,
It...

The noise a whistling kettle makes
I sighed that sound, but there wasn’t the release promised by my mechanical counterparts. Just a deeper sense of acknowledgement of a need for release. I have no interest in spiralling out of control, that self-indulgent firework display is for the amateurs. You know, to take my mind off things, I read a few of your poems, and I just found myself wondering where the human-beings fall to next. Fingers slipping into panties amidst twaddle and rhyme. There’s that whistling kettle again. I wonder what the world looks like to you? Do you look? Or do you write words in your head and then project...

Liliia and the Russian Sniper
The bombing sirens were deafening inside the city. As she came to the edge of the building, she peered around the edge. There was a lull in the shooting. She was 15. Her name was Liliia. She loved her name. Her mother had taught her it meant purity, beauty, and renewal. Her mother would say, "You're my little flower."
Liliia put away her thoughts and ran toward the government building across the street where she knew there was a bomb shelter. She felt the power of her lanky legs, accustomed to running and dancing in school competitions. She pictured the trophies in her...

Checking In
Hey, how's it going?
I thought I'd check in
You may have turned your back
But I'm still your best friend
This search for the light
Hows all of that been?
Thats a rhetorical question
No need to pretend
You're feeling worse than before
I know, cuz im you
Bumbling around aimless
You don't know what to do
At first I was pissed off
Ill admit that it's true
If you love something let it go
Sometimes that works with hate too
You could never beat me
In truth I just backed away
Cuz I...

Drink the Koolaid
The silence of sheep appalls me
Walking on either side of me
How many of you took the jab
And how many times, how many
We don't talk about that
Pretending to walk in a cloud of unknowing
The people who forced sick elderly to stay in old folks homes
To pad the numbers, they needed deaths
Deaths gave reason to treachery
Whose only true reason was basest tyranny
How did you like your masks
Did you keep those souvenirs
Learning how to obediently distance
Simon says, "Jump!"
Did you just jump or did you ask...

On His Anniversary
Every time my wife enters the pool, she can't keep her head above the water
It would look as though she was drowning
I would jump in and save her from the deep end
I'd say, stay in the shallow section, over here
She wouldn't say much and just shake her head
Luckily, I have a lock on the gate, which surrounds the entire in ground pool
I'm the only one that knows the code
I don't allow her near the pool, unless I'm nearby
I needed to install this a few years back, since a tragedy occurred
Our son, who was 4 years old went by the edge of the pool and...

The Lonely Rider in the Storm
A few minutes past the midnight hour, the chambermaids began to scour
Searching for the horrific cries of a woman somewhere on the third floor
And upon finding the guest room, the nervous manager broke in like a goon
They heard her screams of pain coming from behind the bathroom door
The woman yelled “help me please”, there on the bathroom floor on her knees
Clenching her stomach as she bled somewhere underneath her gown
The hotel manager with quick intuition, had a bell boy rush to get a physician
And the young man dashed to fetch the only doctor...

Grandfather
I remember walking into that hospital room
He looked up and made eye contact
A strained smile on his face
His eyes had no fire or willpower behind them
I had never seen that before in his eyes
He was a pillar of strength
He was the only source of stability I had ever known in my life
It broke me in that moment
His leg wrapped at the knee with the rest missing
We talked and I knew that his zeal for life was gone
I thought back to a few weeks earlier
When he told me about the gangrene that had formed on his...

Such is Life
Alina’s life journey began in the love of her parents who married in 2004. Alina was wonderfully formed in her mother’s womb before taking her first breath in 2006.
By 2009, Alina was giving her parents great joy as she developed the use of language. Her mother cried when she first called to her mamma. As she began to walk and dance, her mother was happy because she too was a dancer.
The year 2017 marked the transition of her body from girlhood to womanhood as she experienced the changes of puberty. Her shape and features seemed to change by the day. She placed...

Unsung Heroes Part V: Felipe (dad)
You were born five years before the Spanish Civil War that would see your father exiled.
Language came later to you than your little brother Manuel. And you stuttered for a time.
Unlike those who speak incessantly with nothing to say, you were quiet and reserved.
Your mother mistook shyness for dimness, a tragic mistake that scarred you for life.
When your brother Manuel died at the age of three from meningitis, you heard your mom
Exclaim: “God took my bright boy and left me the dull one.” You were four or five.
You never forgot those words. How could you?...

School Lessons
I've been thinking of all the things I learnt at school. Pythagorean theorem I haven’t needed to find the missing side length of a right triangle to find my way but being taught to be kind and considerate even when it’s hard would have been a useful tool to put in my kit bag ready for physical and emotional exercises.
Also to find courage when you need it most whilst lying to your mother when she is dying but telling her everything is going to be fine. You know I did that for the greater good to ease her pain but was its courage that spoke of my weaknesses to appease. I would have...
