Predawn
It is the time to arise
time to create
while I again await
the break of dawn
No longer a mere pawn
now ruling the night
as I pursue the write
put pen to blank paper
Warmed by the lit taper
its golden glow
while it assists the flow
spilling my precious ink
Striving to make the link
between heart and mind
all in the hope to find
some lasting peace
Unfold every crease
on this ever weary soul
fill in this bottomless hole
while I now fawn before the dawn
time to create
while I again await
the break of dawn
No longer a mere pawn
now ruling the night
as I pursue the write
put pen to blank paper
Warmed by the lit taper
its golden glow
while it assists the flow
spilling my precious ink
Striving to make the link
between heart and mind
all in the hope to find
some lasting peace
Unfold every crease
on this ever weary soul
fill in this bottomless hole
while I now fawn before the dawn

Sailing into the Sun
Hope is always a moving target
elusive…
yet still conducive
to a most graceful way to age
While sailing to the east
chasing a rising sun
ending before it has begun
to turn the tattered page
As I now embrace the day
taking precious time
to listen to Her rhyme
lines forever sage
Sailing into the sun
with a most grateful heart
the perfect place to start
to at long last engage
elusive…
yet still conducive
to a most graceful way to age
While sailing to the east
chasing a rising sun
ending before it has begun
to turn the tattered page
As I now embrace the day
taking precious time
to listen to Her rhyme
lines forever sage

I love it when the night
once again surrounds
with its nautical sounds
such a symphony of delight
In the absence of all light
I hear how each wave pounds
while it still further grounds
me with its melody so bright
Tickled by this warm breeze
while I stroll along the shore
Conversing with the laden trees
about those lazy days of yore
To at last grasp now with ease
all these mysteries I did implore
once again surrounds
with its nautical sounds
such a symphony of delight
In the absence of all light
I hear how each wave pounds
while it still further grounds
me with its melody so bright
Tickled by this warm breeze
while I stroll along the shore

Glide
The swollen river is still
giving me this thrill
slicing through the dawn
to part my solitude
As my kayak now glides
it still hides
ever so silent
among the brown cattails
While I witness the day
make its bright way
the sun rising
spilling its gentle ink
These multicolors swirl
as the vibrancies twirl
on the blank canvas
of another new morn
Again leaving me here
shedding a silent tear
to christening the morning ...
giving me this thrill
slicing through the dawn
to part my solitude
As my kayak now glides
it still hides
ever so silent
among the brown cattails
While I witness the day
make its bright way
the sun rising
spilling its gentle ink
These multicolors swirl
as the vibrancies twirl

Again leaving me here

Waking Early
Poetry Response to “Why
I Wake Early” ~ Mary Oliver
It is why I cannot sleep in
longing so to begin
peel free the citrus dawn
unwrap the black paper
shrouding this night
For each sunrise is a surprise
a gift box full of light
meant for me to hold tight
brighten the cold dark
again lighten my heart

Dawn Treader
I want to cross barefoot on the lawn
feel the cool dew at dawn
know every single yesterday
is a million miles away
Boldly carpe diem the day
say these words I long to say
set myself finally free
in an endless flow of poetry
With only tomorrows left ahead
those brilliant dawns left to tread
feel the cool dew at dawn
know every single yesterday
is a million miles away
Boldly carpe diem the day
say these words I long to say
set myself finally free
in an endless flow of poetry
With only tomorrows left ahead

Dawn Breaking
There is no mistaking
when the dawn is breaking
this colorful spill
of so many new hues
While dark night fades away
bright light floods the day
all vibrant and fresh
spattering the wide horizon
As She paints Her bold art
inspiring us once again to start
when the dawn is breaking
this colorful spill
of so many new hues
While dark night fades away
bright light floods the day
all vibrant and fresh
spattering the wide horizon
As She paints Her bold art
inspiring us once again to start

Dawning
There is no mourning
at dawn
with cool dew on the lawn
paint spilt across the sky
For each moment is full
pregnant with possibility
with life and its agility
to unfold itself before me
No longer am I afraid
for all of the fright
from the deep dark night
is vanquished by this sunrise
As the new day begins
with warm gentle rays
these splendid summer days
when winter is just a memory
With so much left behind
in a long quest to find...
at dawn
with cool dew on the lawn
paint spilt across the sky
For each moment is full
pregnant with possibility
with life and its agility
to unfold itself before me
No longer am I afraid
for all of the fright
from the deep dark night

Seabreeze
I do love the tease
of a cool salty breeze
feel it sting my reverent eyes
while I scan the grey horizon
Watching sea meet sky
how they are able to defy
the limits of thought
the limits of imagination
For the things I now see
set my spirit gamboling free
to some kinder forgotten time
to some ever distant shore
While white frothy waves
wash away weathered graves
the fear of death
drowns in this hope
As I still await the sun
for this new new day now begun
to share it golden rays ...
of a cool salty breeze

Sunrise
The cold morning is still
draped in the dark
awaiting that first spark
to light up the horizon
Creativity again looms
as my imagination blooms
with the first gentle rays
the first vibrant hues
So... which will I choose
the softer orange
or the bright red
to light my way ahead
Help me see the words
guide between the lines
while the sun now shines
a gentle warming glow
Illuminating all I know
as well as all I do not
things that I once forgot
now a surprise at sunrise
draped in the dark
awaiting that first spark
to light up the horizon
Creativity again looms
as my imagination blooms
with the first gentle rays
the first vibrant hues
So... which will I choose

Leeward
The Caribbean winds still blow
where they wish to go
warm and soft
across the limbo waves
How each one saves
a little time
commits a little crime
stealing away to memory
Smoothing like fine emery
the barbs of the day
hurtful words that I say
replacing them with smiles
To carry me on a dream
as the dawn does now gleam
a million glittery stones
one for each who atones
A chance for a fresh start
to unbreak my heart
to once again feel the balm
immersed within this calm
where they wish to go
warm and soft
across the limbo waves
How each one saves
a little time
commits a little crime
stealing away to memory
Smoothing like fine emery
the barbs of the day

In the East
East is the direction of beginnings. It is sunrise.” ~ Joy Harjo
I face dawn each morning
listen closely for its warning
for each day is not
its yesterday
Nor is it its tomorrow
steep in the same sorrow
salted tears
dreaded memories
For each day is anew
bathed in a fresh dew
meant to cleanse
more than just bare feet
A moment for taking time
to whisper silent rhyme
listening to the words
marveling in their syllables
A new chance to commune
with no need of any...
