kite strings
Some days
I feel like a runaway kite
caught in the branches of a tree
the wind wants to take me
but this world wants to tether me
I've been smashing into trees
ever since I was small enough
to learn how to climb
how to face the fear
and jump
how to brace
for the inevitable fall
I still carry the splinters
between my thighs
across my arms
down my ribs
I like way the memories hurt
because they remind me
I've always been chasing freedom ...

20 Years
Hey, kiddo.”
I say softly as she walks into view, a warm smile already tugging on my lips. She lifts her head to meet my eyes, tilting it as she observes my face, before suddenly announcing, “You look like Grammy!” I can’t help but chuckle at her response, kneeling down so that we are eye-to-eye. I watch as she takes in my most despised parts, my double chin, thin mouth, and plump cheeks, a mix of curiosity and affection shining in her bright brown eyes.
“I guess so.” I reply quietly, a similar blend of emotions swimming with tears in mine. There are so many things I...

Life Moves On
I remember a day
So very long ago
When I'd play in the garden
Chasing ladybugs in summer
There was beauty in the simplicity
The sunny days of 2000-something
When age was a single number
And I was still in one piece
This world will change you
It'll darken your innocent soul
Draining your heart
As things fall apart
We'd all love to stay in those good old days
But life moves on
Do you remember
So very long ago
When we could play make-believe
Our imagination limitless
It's funny...

Secrets - Disagreement
What's up?' Mel says as I make a start of the supper. 'Is it about that bloke downstairs offering to teach Robert the harmonica?'
She's chosen her moment well. Robert's in the shower. 'Well,' I say. 'You saw how he was with Freddy.'
'He was just intrigued, that's all.'
'Yeah, I know. But I'm his dad.'
'Yes, and you’re a good dad.'
'Really?'
'Course you are.'
'Look, he doesn't speak to me. He blanks me all the time.'
'Me too,' Mel says. 'Listen, I've been thinking about it a lot...

No Title.
That little girl's rotting corpse,
Still moans in my bones,
And no amount of makeup,
Could make her pretty again.
Still moans in my bones,
And no amount of makeup,
Could make her pretty again.

In the Shadow of Stars
When I looked up at the endless night,
Stars twinkled like secrets whispered low,
I asked the heavens, “Where’s the light?
If God is real, where did you go?”
In my heart a storm was brewing,
A tempest of love turned bitter and wild,
For in those dark moments I felt so alone,
With blood on my hands and a heart defiled.
You were my anchor; you were my grace,
But addiction wrapped you in chains of despair,
Each promise made now lost in the space—
Where laughter once danced hangs silence and air. ...

Secrets - Vow Of Silence
They say the bike race was my idea, that you and the others would have preferred to stay indoors that August Bank Holiday Monday. In the shade where it was nice and cool. But your mum agreed with me. It's a lovely day, she said, why don't you go out and play in the park before school starts again?
Except I lied, according to the evidence. I suggested the local park; that's true. But once we got out, I came up with the idea of going in the opposite direction, to Whaley Hill. Our parents didn't like us going to Whaley Hill, especially the reservoir at the top. They thought the hill...

Green
It's the tides that breathe,
It's the trees.
Its the windows unwashed,
It's the way you said it.
You grip the side of the table,
You kick your legs wildly.
You look for an answer,
You don't hit anything.
It's the teeth still loose,
It's sleep still running,
It's the smell of my youth.
You tack a photo to the wall,
You smile the same way,
I look 2 inches taller.
It's the dreams still real,
It's the Halloween costumes,
It's the plastic spoons.
It's the way you said it,
You said it.
Said it like a name...
It's the trees.
Its the windows unwashed,
It's the way you said it.
You grip the side of the table,
You kick your legs wildly.
You look for an answer,

Iris Eileen
young lark delights
over prairie fields
soaring high for
the golden light
lark caged within
cities of care
calling out for
expansive lands
released lark
ascending
finding home
in spirit’s hands

soaring high for
the golden light
lark caged within

Stillness
He is kneeling at the dining room table,
as if he is praying.
Tenderly he opens his hands,
and I see he is cradling our sky blue parakeet.
Tears streaming down his red cheeks, he looks at me.
The tiny creature taking its last breaths.
Feathers ripped from its wings and blood speckled on Dad's fingers.
The cat, I thought. Oh no.
We didn't say a word. His eyes told me there was nothing we can do.
Suddenly, I am spinning.
My throat becomes tight, like a hand is pressing against my voice box.
My eyes become hot,...
as if he is praying.
Tenderly he opens his hands,
and I see he is cradling our sky blue parakeet.
Tears streaming down his red cheeks, he looks at me.
The tiny creature taking its last breaths.
Feathers ripped from its wings and blood speckled on Dad's fingers.

Secrets - Meeting With Gordon
I recognise him straightaway. Gordon Day, even though he looks nothing like the Gordon Day you and I knew once. Back then, Gordon was a small boy, ruddy faced, with a mop of reddish-brown hair – lovable, in a way, but impish, I suppose. The guy in the gym looks like a tough nut capable of taking someone round the side and laying into them. He's wearing a blue gym vest with the gym logo on, the sort of vest that shows off serious muscle, and his cropped hair and the grin make him appear more youthful than a person in their mid-thirties.
He stops talking to the henna hair...
