My birthday has become
a time of giving and serving
It's an exchange of gratitude
for another year of living
What better way to share
than providing a home
for a rescue kitty
who needed to be loved
Isn't that true for all of us
“And, in the end
The love you take
is equal to the love you make.”

October Poems 2024 >> it is finished!
October Poems 2024
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
DAY 31
it is finished!
my days of reckless dalliance are gone,
as on the edge of ancientness i stand
to welcome, from the mist, a soberer dawn,
whence infidelity is strictly banned.
my restless pen has found a nobler ink
for every parchment worthy of its merit;
it supersedes pedantic mental quinque,
to bless the page on which i would confer it.
my stormy fights with youth phenomena,
upon daredevil precipice and cliff, ...

October Poems 2024 >> give me to drink
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
\
DAY 30
give me to drink
give me to drink
of mornings of bright sunshine
spilling over hills and plains.
stand on the brink
of pleasance gushing forth, wine-
coloured, full of sweet refrains.
give me to drink
of bird songs full of whistle,
pipe, and tube and reed and horn
in perfect sync
to celebrate earth’s istle
with the anthems of the morn.
give me to drink
of laughter of riant children
of a summer afternoon,
regaled by pink ...

October Poems 2024 >> broken strings—broken wings
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
DAY 29
broken strings—broken wings
the spot you’ve left here vacant
no longer find i fragrant,
for all your charm has vanished with the wind.
the voices i am hearing
have petrified my bearing
for i am by their told-you-so chagrined.
that cold october morning,
without the slightest warning,
your heart repurposed was no longer mine,

October Poems 2024 >> and dream this is a dream
October Poems 2024
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
DAY 28
and dream this is a dream
i cannot seem to go another mile,
but i will struggle on, till fully spent
of all my sweat and tears and mercantile.
the arrows that i daily circumvent
are undeterred by stealth or camouflage;
yet, if i could just make it to the bend,
i’d get beyond the infernal sabotage
with which by night and day i must contend.
but what if i could reach the river pass,
and drag myself across the bamboo bridge: ...

October Poems 2024 >> broken
October Poems 2024
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
DAY 27
broken
if e’er the broken vessel
could bear the healing balm,
i own me, then, the trestle
whose groans become the psalm.
a broken reed low bowing
beside a well-trod path,
passersby scarcely knowing
their whim has bared its wrath.
a honey bee flip-flopping
by one exhausted wing,
where idle boys, hip-hopping,
have trampled on its sting.

October Poems 2024 >> what is my life
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
DAY 26
what is my life
what is my life upon this golden strand,
tomorrow gone, although now, here, i stand,
a breath of shallow air upon the lung
of God’s great universe, where i am flung?
i am a blink of eye sparked by a glimpse
of paradise, from which man, fallen, limps
upon an earth that swallows soon his rhyme,
to make him but a blot in space and time.
i am a word scarce fallen from the lips,
a dance scarce cradled by a mother’s hips,
a butterfly...

October Poems 2024 >> why i write
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
DAY 25
why i write
i write because life’s fires burn like hell,
singeing the hairs that crown my head and back,
while i am left outside the citadel,
confronted by time’s cunning almanac.
i write because my tongue is petrified
by ropes of metaphoric voicelessness,
whose strangulation pen will have defied,
where stand i unbereft of choicelessness.
i write because my raw blade seems too sharp
against the jugulars of provocateurs
who rip two...

October Poems 2024 >> rainbow promises
October Poems 2024
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
DAY 24
rainbow promises
i’ve had my fair share
of what is unfair:
make haste and get out of my city!
when lions went loose,
and flames cooked my goose,
nor did i not expire in self-pity.
i stood on the side
and watched others ride
their chariots with footmen to guide them;
blinded by their dust,
i bore their unjust
cold-shoulders, for tears could not void them.
i longed for a taste
of women so chaste
they knew...

October Poems 2024 >> a fine son
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
DAY 23
a fine son
A Birthday Psalm for my Son
Javon Andrew Phillips Bowen (b. October 23)
a fine son is a many-splendoured thing
of which the universe is proud to sing;
for from the loins of one man comes an heir
to celebrate him who, before, was there.
a fine son knows the lineage of the earth,
for in it gales the echoes of his birth,
whose dust to dustman rises from the ground
to rule, with wisdom, choices that abound
to every man...

October Poems 2024 >> dreams, for the moment, inarticulate
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
DAY 22
dreams, for the moment, inarticulate
just let me get the hell out of your face
and save myself from consummate disgrace.
feel free to strike my name out of your book,
me disentangle from your cloying hook.
the price of love may be a sacrifice
of sanity, to gain fool’s paradise
—or, better still, the lonely hangman’s noose,
whose living were superior in recluse.
no man on earth could love you as i do,
no heart could brand you with more...

October Poems 2024 >> curtain call
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
DAY 21
curtain call
are you your own damn hero?
blow your horn!
his magnitude is zero,
whose the scorn
of lesser earthbound creatures,
who from toil
erect life’s grandest features
from mere soil.
is wealth your gloomy terror?
nuisance!
it is a fiscal error
to advance
your borrowed, transient substance
in the face
of bigotted reluctance
to embrace
naught of the vacant posture
of the lean. ...
