Once Upon An English Hospital
I.
70 has been screaming
blue murder at God
since I arrived.
I tell her
she can’t take my stick
fuck that—
it’s the good one
this country can’t afford

39. Black. Floor length puffa jacket.
Stands on a waiting room soapbox
about how cops are out for his blood
tells me to look out for him
on social media
I ask him his name
he tells me it’s LeeRoy
I’m stuck between sympathy
for his mental breakdown
and the fact I’ve never met

Jack Tha Lad In Jack Land
Gino went and played pool every Friday night.
With his friend Stevie G, they'd go and have some pints.
The stress from his Mrs at home was wearing on his brain,
So he always wanted to cut it loose, so he didn't go insane!
One day, when he was off his bonce, he drank shots at the bar.
He pulled this little, fine ting, but he never took it far.
He would meet her every other day, and Emma was her name.
Till Poppy spotted them out one day and chased her down the lane.
Gino and Emma used to hook up, but only...

Lines Handwritten Inside a New English Bible
The skyline of the new Jerusalem
stands out against a cloth of black.
To me, an English church
is always clean and crisp like March mornings,
a spray of orange sunflowers,
a stained image of lambs.
The image-bearers walk in robes of sun
and might include me too, if I
could make the leap to faith.
The Bible structures rise within my head,
the flat-roofed cities of the plain
atop which women bathe.

there’s no more big shops
the town has more vape shops
and charity shops and barber
shops and coffee
shops
around for a while, but he just
misses woolworths

Angst
Tensions have risen
The fuse has been lit
Anarchy has broken out
The country's gone to shit
You wait ages for a doctor
Our waters riddled with disease
The roads are full of potholes
No one says 'Excuse me, Thank You or Please'
The public are fed up
There's an overflow of aggression
The 1% coast on by
As the rest work through a recession
The boats hit the shores
An influx of illegal immigration
While it's not the main problem
It doesn't help the situation

Life Lessons pt 4 (Revelations)
(It did not rain all the time in London. The sidewalks were cleaner. Older Londoners love to have tea with milk and cookies. I remember there was also a thing about flowers in the front yard and it had to look better than someone else’s)
This was our last week in the UK. David and I were allowed to see each other as long as there was an adult nearby.
My sister and I and the other cousins went to meet up with some of their friends from school. These are the same bunch of girls that offered me the cigarette.

Life Lessons pt 2 (England)
One year later, turning fourteen should not be a pivotal point in anyone’s life. Spoke too soon.
Mom told me and my sister we were all going to England to visit family for the summer. We did not know how to feel since we had never met them before. We left when the sun was setting in the city. It was a beautiful site to see through the small circular window of the plane.
She gave both of us a piece of gum and we thought that was strange since we both have braces and are not allowed to eat it normally.
“Chew it and swallow when we take off. It will help with...

High Upon Stone
Ice cracked bones
Heart made of stone
The statue sits upon its throne
All alone birds tend
Her loneliness
Heeding her muted cries
Within is a heart
That could never lie
Outside a body and face
That shall never die
Heart made of stone
The statue sits upon its throne
All alone birds tend
Her loneliness
Heeding her muted cries

The closing flame
beat the shadows
and the stars
into submission
pray
ask questions both
in life and in sleep
hold out hands to weave
the vast threads of that
great beyond
be still
burn wild flames
long into the night
hold the words
of those spirits
thank them for presence
for humble inspiration
in this world
and the next
because the old ways
are alive
they are beating
their love
against the sky
follow their wings...

Hymn to the Land
bury your wounds, allowing
moorland dirt to coat fingernails
thinking of soles and toes and ankles
drumming dirt with the dance
of memories, of Beltane fires
wild arms extended
fingers flexed as if reaching
through clouds, weaving
night into glorious day
let a body drop, the weight of it
swaying gently on hammocks
made of willow branches
waiting for rain—
pure, crystalline droplets
falling from a mottled sky
giving yourself over to it all
bruised, yet full and feeling
because you...

Hymn to the Otherworld
I’m unsure if it was a white horse
ruffled at the neck, unbridled
hooves in the dust until one of us
woke in the half-light of dreaming
if it burst from the stars
across a scorched earth,
punctuated the silence
that Dream Of Gerontius
made flesh, waiting for
the dark hum of man.
Did it seek out the deserts
the black tumble of time
through fingers
that latched on to longing
on to every living thing
searched for warmth
begged for a face
how it burned...

Hymn to King Penda
bent in two, your crooked crown
speaks of distance between
land and sky
of Mercia burning alive
drummed by the feet of Saxons
who proclaimed a different name
beat you with that one true God
unfamiliar to a heathen tongue
and so, I think of you fondly
as I sit beneath a tree in England
your bones quaking in familiar mud
tangled with tree roots, those boggy oaks
that rot slowly—
life becoming death
death becoming eternity
and I note the gold cross
they branded you with
becomes sand running ...
