African Dreams
I have always had African dreams
planned sub-Saharan schemes
to trek along with the big game
call myself by an older name
One I do choose myself
from all others on the shelf
the lyrics to my own song
within this place I now belong
As I finally can put aside
all these things I once denied
take up a fresher trail
feel cool wind within my sail
Crossing this savannah plain
I follow the path of the rain
going where only it can go
showing only what...

In the Bush
I left the big city so far away
somewhere back down the road
with its laden urban load
to head out toward some better way
Crossing all these rugged miles
as I tally them one by one
beneath a blazing midday sun
lit up by all these Kenyan smiles
While I weave through the grass
follow the cool fickle breeze
through all these acacia trees
letting all the noble elands pass
For this is where I long to be
roaming free on the range
balance permanence and...

Ink from Africa
How then to pen this write
capture every facet of delight
the simple blessing of each day
while I make my safaring way
Crossing the tall savannah grass
waiting for the oryx herds to pass
waiting for them to lead me
to this place where I am free
Dark earth beneath bright sky
again answers me why
I come back to now face
the majesty of this holy place
As I listen to the silent sound
of this wisdom all around
how it can...

Inks of Africa
Another Kenyan sun does rise
above in clear sapphire skies
a gentle glow across the grass
will not allow all this to pass
Since I have come a long way
just to now be able to say
nothing… let the savannah speak
in voices both bold and meek
As life again comes alive
this endless struggle to survive
the truth of tooth and claw
leaves me once again in awe
For there is beauty in ugly death
an eternity between each breath
as I watch the elephant herd
recite...

Lioness
You always protect your young
teach them through an ancient tongue
passed down through the years
a lesson each cub then fears
About the truth about man
how he seemingly can
destroy all that he sees
like the scourge of disease
Always seeking to alone
while he strives to unthrone
the very king of the beasts
as his ego again feasts
Having acquired a taste
for forever laying waste
to world where he lives
then taking more than he gives
Meanwhile you bide your time
composing...

Black Earth and Ivory
"Dark skies fall on
black earth and ivory" ~ Enya
This lone continent is so vast
allowing me to again lose
anything I so choose
misplace my future in my past
Taking me right out of time
blend day together with night
a perfect ink for a perfect write
to test the limits of rhyme
While I follow another fresh trail
deep tracks in shallow sand
allow me to now understand

Elephant Grey
What is there left to maybe say
about this elephant grey
with little lingering doubt
as to what this life is all about
How slowly morning will then pass
watching them eat savannah grass
I take stock of the passage of time
how it manages to fit inside rhyme
Long lazy days in the sun
while these hours pass one by one
lengthen the cool shadows
with each new matter I propose
For far off in the distance
sits Mount Kenya with his insistence
that I only focus on this now
ignore...

Yogafari
We journey to this distant land
across sea, jungle and sand
to find a new yogini way
to begin every yogafari day
To help our practice restart
embrace this joy within our heart
one belly breath at a time
so each may fill an entire rhyme
Listening to sleek gazelle
whisper these secrets they tell
poems they can only share
out in wide open savannah air
About a rare posing they have seen
camouflaged...

Nairobi
The morning sun has begun to rise
revealing another new surprise
brightening the Dark Continent
softening some of this deep lament
While the big city begins to bustle
with all its high stakes hustle
commerce since its beginning
this stage of both losing and winning
Finding me here now lost
bewildered by the cost
of all these miles traveled
on roads both dirt and graveled
As I again go to these extremes
still one who dares these dreams
putting down on paper ...

Lewa Memories
The savannah sun again rises
revealing all of his surprises
behind Mount Kenya’s shadows
where awe and wonder grows
Watching the gray elephant herd
I listen for every silent word
whispered through acacia trees
by the cool morning breeze
For here within a single breath
you can witness life and death
the profound lessons of each
this wisdom now within reach
As I spy king lion then yawn
his profile bold against the dawn
see how the sunshine now glows
paints him auric as he goes
While I begin...

My Guide… My Friend
Tall and proud as Mount Kenya is high
his stride is swift and strong
carrying him boldly along
beneath this blue savannah sky
With brave and keen eyes
he tracks every sort of beast
from the greatest to the least
never afraid of tooth, claw or size
Listening to their wild call
he sets out each new day
in search of a better way
to pay deep homage to it all
For he is a warrior still at heart
whether death is far or near
making life with its lessons clear
right from the very start
Francis is...
