Understanding
Found a stripped falcon carcass this morning, or it found me.
Preserved in the snow and ice; last flight long flew
and this is it. The result. Scoffed by earth's quickest.
Bones, tendons and cartilage still tough and dense. Tough enough
to fly but dense enough to give everything to whatever finds it
and the earth will take them too.
These bones have seen things, without understanding
without needing to. They've spun the world just for dinner
and maybe the indulgence of a quick wind
over deep valleys, casting shadows bigger than busses,
quicker than thoughts. Its brazen beak agape, as it is now.
I can hear it in the distance. Sounds like a friend.
I tell it, it shouldn't understand, but know
that it's understood, anymore would kill you again.
