Breaking From Cancer
She spoke
Out of her mouth, the words did flow
So hallow
Her voice could not betray
All I heard was decay
In here eyes, tears started to rise
They perched at her lashes
On the brink
Threatening to take the leap
To cascade down her cheeks
Leaving behind watery streaks of disbelief
She was breathing
Her body warm, circulating blood normally
Her hands were trembling
I cupped my own hands around hers, trying to be strong
I held them tight, warding off my own thoughts
She was here, right beside me
She was only here physically
I searched her eyes
I prayed to a God I don't even know if I believe in
Begging, please don't do this
Don't take her soul for you to keep
I could not detect any life behind her hazel eyes
Her soul was long gone, origin unknown
I could hardly speak
Afraid she would hear the creak of fear seep from my voice
The only thing I could manage to utter, in a tiny whisper
I won't let you die alone
I love you, Mother.
