Breaking through the ice

Held beneath an icy barrier
I'm running out of time
I'm so cold down here
Hypothermia taking it course
I can feel the chill on my bones
I try to keep moving
But it's hard when it's freezing
My fists reign tiny upon
The thick layer of ice
A violent mantra of desperation
I will not give up
Not until my lungs collapse
I'm breaking the ice slowly
I can see the light reaching for me
As I gain another chance to breathe
The bitter water
Starts to take it's toll on me
But I don't stop
I strike again
And again
And again
As I finally break through
The light embraces me with it's warmth
As I pull myself out of the depths
Crimson drips onto the ice
From my knuckles
I drag myself to my feet
Shivering, I smile at the sun
How odd, it's so warm above the ice
And how relieving it is to be able to walk
I'm alive
And I'm smiling
I embrace the winds that chill
That cut my skin
Life has never been so vivid
And I have never been so grateful
