sidewalk
feet grinding on an uneven sidewalk
that never ends, and starts in the middle
scenery repeats itself as the pavement keeps rolling by
to step off of this bludgeoning sidewalk would mean
certain death
destroyed by wheels hurtling by
out of control
and to open one of the many doors
on the opposite side would cause nothing
but a grand illusion
leaving the beholder miserable and weak
feet keep dragging over the sidewalk,
day after day;
perhaps one of these mornings
they'll get around to fixing it
re-laying the squares
and finishing what they started.
