Controlling The Monster

At last I have finally been allowed to see
A glimpse of the demon You’ve kept from me
Though he has vile thoughts and very sharp claws
Why do you insist he is one of Your flaws?

Your monster is just another facet of You
The part that takes what He wants, when He wants it too
The part that never asks but always demands
The part that makes my body mere clay in His hands

Yes he grumbles and growls, He scratches and bites
And when I cry out, He finds pure delight
He whispers to me of how he’ll make me bleed
If ever He shows me the true depth of His need

He may be scary and ugly and nasty and mean
Yet I feel pity, as strange as that seems
He’s been imprisoned, punished, and beat
When all he wanted was a little something to eat

The surface we’ve scratched, now we must seek
How to let Him have fun but keep Him appropriately weak
A workable harmony will be hard to affect
But it isn’t something to which I’d object

Do I fear that Your monster might damage me?
Do I fear what might happen if He really ran free?
To not fear those things would be a mistake
But deny Him completely and control he WILL take

So this most delicate balance together we’ll find
With this creature of dark that inhabits your mind
For without equilibrium, we both will fall
And, unchecked, to the surface Your monster will crawl

Because He won’t ever leave You, He’ll always be there
You can’t leave Him alone to just starve in His lair
He is after all a part of who You are
And he isn’t so bad, at least not so far
