Love?

Once upon a time, what a beautiful phrase,
There lived a small girl who was happy, and brave
Her parents divorced in befuddling haze
The love between parents was all the girl craved
She grew up with questions afloat in her mind
Which caused her to ponder, and think for some time
She searched for answers that she could not find
Alone in a world where her parents weren't kind
"Daddy," she asked, as he tucked her in bed
and kissed her good night as tradition so pled
"What is this 'love', is it all in my head?"
He sighed and he stayed, to explain it instead
"Love is made of many parts,
and sometimes is seen as a playful art,
but love is more than flirting and lust,
it's a longing to please, and to serve, and to trust.
There is something some call 'pure love' or 'true love'
when two are a unit and completely one.
It's to think of another more than yourself,
More than your need for attention and help.
If two can but think of each others desires
then both are fulfilled, and neither one tires."
He frowned in despair as he thought for a while
then looked at the girl as she gave him a smile
He said "It is rare, and though it exists,
true love is not common, it's only a wish."
The girl's eyes were set when she stoutly proclaimed
"I'll love only truly, with love never maimed
by want of attention and wishes untamed."
Her father then smiled at her yearning for right,
and said "Have sweet dreams," as he turned out the light.
