I Imagine He Has Come To Rescue Me
I imagine he has come to rescue me.
My ear against the sand hears
The horse's throb. It comes closer.
The dark green forest is ghost-filled nowdays.
I am afraid. I go into the cabin to pack
That which is precious to me: mirror, rouge, and poems
And wait by the door. It will be all right.
I am afraid, but I also anticipate
The ride out of this place, close behind him
And inhaling the odor of the horse
For hours on end.
When he comes, he has this other woman with him.
I think back to the message he sent ahead.
We will be coming it said. Who
Did I think he meant by We? The horse?
She is thin and red-haired. Her small white fingers
Play with his belt loops. I kick my bundle
Behind a stump. Why do I think of her as the other woman?
Who am I? There is only room for two on that horse.
It is lonely out here and one begins
To imagine things. I feed them. They wash up.
He swings her back up into the saddle.
Leaning against his chest, she eyes me
Blankly. He ruffles my hair. Certainly
I will ride out on the next train, he says.
We will all meet somewhere, someday.
They go, and I begin to worry.
How will I get out of here?
