like a stranger
you had no way of knowing
as you sat down next to me
you seemed just like a stranger
someone i knew just vaguely
instead of someone who said
they loved me constantly
you asked about our old dog
i relayed to you she'd died
i said i could not tell you
as all i could do was cry
you seemed to understand why
i had kept it all inside
you turned around to face me
there was sadness in your eyes
the life we'd had together
was destroyed by all your lies
i had no way of knowing
that you were going to die
no, i did not know that day
i'd never see you again
they said you'd died swiftly
when your car was hit head on
there are things i could tell you
but i can't because you're gone
as you sat down next to me
you seemed just like a stranger
someone i knew just vaguely
instead of someone who said
they loved me constantly
you asked about our old dog
i relayed to you she'd died
i said i could not tell you
as all i could do was cry
you seemed to understand why
i had kept it all inside
you turned around to face me
there was sadness in your eyes
the life we'd had together
was destroyed by all your lies
i had no way of knowing
that you were going to die
no, i did not know that day
i'd never see you again
they said you'd died swiftly
when your car was hit head on
there are things i could tell you
but i can't because you're gone

The sadness & the pain...it's all there, Faith. So moving and so beautifully written. The finishing lines are especially telling:
there are things i could tell you
but i can't because you're gone
Very well-written piece, my friend!

Thank you so much, Carlene. Yes, sadly this is a true story and how my ex-husband left this world.

Yep! So many times we pass up precious moments that we could have shared. Left words unspoken. :(

it was so unexpected and even though we had been divorced for a year, it still hit me bad...writing about it helped me to get through it

Heart hugs given. Memories remain with us long after they are experienced. Here is to more GREAT memories to come and less pained ones.
