Eyes on Fire [excerpt]

[an excerpt from Chapter 2]

She walked past me into the room and I closed my door, watching her sit at the stool for the vanity as I sat back down on my bed. “Today, by the forest, they found Yanee’s body.” I gasped, covering my mouth in horror and shock. “She was mauled badly and there was no blood in her body, they think she’s been there for a little over a week now. The police are also worried because she did not decompose in that amount of time.”

“Ya-Yanee can’t be dead, I just spoke to her a couple weeks ago…”

      “I’m sorry, Viana…”

I shook my head slowly, jumping up and sprinting out of my room and jumping down the stairs, taking two at a time as Barb chased me calling my name. My tears were hot on my face as I yanked on a pair of sandals I left by the front door and continued sprinting away from my house. Barb called behind me from the front door, “Viana, come back! Please, don’t go doing anything stupid, please come back honey!” I ignored her calls though and just kept running. My phone vibrated in my pocket like crazy, but I ignored it, I didn’t want to talk I just wanted to run for an eternity. I was so sick of this world, how could I not have known Yanee was hurt somewhere? If I had known… I bit back sobs as I ran through the playground and straight into the forest, the fog wrapping tight around my body. Whatever was in this damned place had killed my closest and only friend, and I wasn’t going to stand for it! I’d rather die too than have to live without the only person I’d gotten close to since the death of my mother.

“Yanee!” I gasped out, tripping over a root that stuck up out of the ground, hitting the dirt with a loud thud. The wind was knocked out of me, so my sobs were soundless as I gripped desperately at the small amount of grass here and there, tugging the patches away completely as I slid myself forward some. “Please… Please, I don’t want to be all alone again, Yanee! I’m so scared, please tell me this is some sort of sick joke!”

I felt a warm hand wrap around my arm, lifting me to my feet slowly, “Viana, are you alright? I could smell the blood nearly a mile away...” I looked up slowly, seeing Grey’s worried face, “You’re crying…” He brushed a thumb on my cheek and without thinking I wrapped my arms around his waist and buried my face in his chest, sobbing helplessly. His arms curled around me slowly, one of his hands petting my hair, “It’s alright, calm down… I’m here now, nothing will hurt you…”
