Late Autumn Beachcombing
Alone we walk along the tan, pristine October sand
All of the frantic footprints of summer having long washed away
The lonely gulls fly overhead, calling out woefully
As if asking us why we are still here, haven't fled
It is a spectacular day, the sun golden and vibrant
With both a warmth in the air and an occasional chill
We savor early morning on Maryland's Eastern Shore
Suddenly sharing the beach with a jogger and a hopeful fisherman
Your hand is tiny and chilled in my hand as I warm it
Reminding me that you're here with me now, like you always have been
In the background is the low rolling, drumming of the surf
Connecting us to life eternal and where it all began
As you bend down, you pick up a washed up seashell like a curious little redheaded girl so full of wonder
I'm reminded of how many different ways I love you
My mind wanders back and forth to all many miles of beaches we've walked together throughout the years
And how lucky I am that you've led me by the hand around the world
For a moment I'm a little saddened that we too are in our autumn
But then again thankful that I realize and appreciate this
Turning you towards me, I pull you in close
Feeling your cold nose nestle into my neck
Then I close my eyes and kiss you long and gentle
Adding this to my treasure chest of cherished memories
All of the frantic footprints of summer having long washed away
The lonely gulls fly overhead, calling out woefully
As if asking us why we are still here, haven't fled
