Becoming A Man

Stepping out in the darkness of a hot night
Looking for something to fight
I need a target for my expanding sense of justice
And if you think you're a bad man
It just might be you
I met a man in Tennessee who thought it made him tough
To beat on his boy and his wife
I showed him the error of his ways
A .45 that took him to his grave
And went on my way feeling noble
And true
To myself and what I believed
There was nothing that I couldn't be
A good man with my pure conviction
I should have seen that it was only fiction
I'd become what I professed to hate
A bad man who was willing to kill
I thought my reasoning was true and just
But when you kill
It kills what's true inside of you
And now I'm gone
A long way down a longer road
Now I'm lost
There is no way to get back home
This is the cost of becoming a man
It can cost you all you have and more
Starting out with such good intentions
End up running from your own actions
And I'll be running for ever more
I'm gone
A long way down the longest road
