Lakeside

The lake is quiet and deserted as
a once blue sky greys,
welcoming the twilight.
Empty footprints, soulless reminders
of sun drenched memories,
soon will be washed from sight.
Waves caress the cooling sand,
a rhythmic splash of sound against
approaching darkness.
Near water's edge, a solitary
figure sits, motionless, gazing out
at each incoming wave,
Alone, forgotten as this stretch of beach,
recalling yesterday's footprints
only memories can save.
She stands, drops a flower in the surf,
and wanders on, as still another wave
crashes to the shore.
