October Poems 2024
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born

DAY 27
broken

if e’er the broken vessel
could bear the healing balm,
i own me, then, the trestle
whose groans become the psalm.

a broken reed low bowing
beside a well-trod path,
passersby scarcely knowing
their whim has bared its wrath.

a honey bee flip-flopping
by one exhausted wing,
where idle boys, hip-hopping,
have trampled on its sting.

a butterfly lies dying,
bereft of wide-winged worth
because of kind hands trying
by force to help them forth.

a bird upon a willow
peals out its mournful cry,
for, in his jest, some fellow
has clipped the wings that fly.

a frog has lost his ribbit
to injuries by stone,
for jokes by someone’s habit
mean death to him alone.

a man sold at the auction,
by rhyme and reason bruised,
finds death an easy option
to dignity abused.

if e’er this broken vessel
could bear life’s healing balm,
i own me, then, the trestle
whose groans become the psalm.
