October Poems 2024 >> curtain call
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
DAY 21
curtain call
are you your own damn hero?
blow your horn!
his magnitude is zero,
whose the scorn
of lesser earthbound creatures,
who from toil
erect life’s grandest features
from mere soil.
is wealth your gloomy terror?
nuisance!
it is a fiscal error
to advance
your borrowed, transient substance
in the face
of bigotted reluctance
to embrace
naught of the vacant posture
of the lean.
adorned with regal vesture
is the mien
of legendary seekers
after light,
who bear no sleep through winter’s
bitter night.
my heroes are meek teachers,
who unmask
the minds of hungry seekers,
true to task;
the weavers of fresh dances
for the blind,
oft by hope’s final chances
left behind.
my heroes are lost widows
grinding bread,
that children in life’s hollows
may be fed.
my heroes are the brave, who
take the fall
to make way for earth’s last true
Curtain Call.
