Outside Forces

I bide ‘neath trees, where none doth see
in shadows deep, thou com’st to me
No eyes to watch, no hands to grasp
yet still I reach, yet still I clasp

I am the breath that stirs the air
the weight that mak’st thy heart to scare
I move in silence, cold and sly
a thought, a thing thou canst not spy

Thou walk’st the path, yet I am near
within each sigh, within thy fear
Thy steps do tremble, feed my thirst
for in thy dread, I find my first

I am the chill that ‘neath thy skin
doth creep, doth crawl, and pull thee in
I need no form, nor mortal frame
yet here I dwell, without a name

I whisper low, I shift, I hide
a shade that lives where none hath died
I am the dark, the woods, the night
I haunt thy steps, unseen in sight

No flesh to mark, no soul to tell
yet in thy fear, I fashion hell
I wait, I watch, I do not leave
for thou art mine, when thou dost grieve
