October Poems 2024 >> the countdown
A poem for each day of the month in which I was born
October 07
the countdown
oneself must be abased in one’s own true eyes,
lest one should plummet swiftly from one’s blue skies.
twos days are opportune for dialoguing,
where oneself self-destructs on monologuing
treetops are ripe three-stops for those who journey
with friends, for one may need a rare attorney
to say, not left, nor right, but through the valley,
whose destination boasts a grand finale
four ever-young, the heart transformed by mercy,
fivacious spirits quelling controversy;
for rational decrees rule in the jungle,
where self-ambition claims false rights to bungle.
six-packs and abs and glutes make handsome bodies,
though fools seldom recover from parodies
that sail them on the seven-seas at random,
to face a world of fantasies and phantoms.
i ate my cake and have it not, forever;
benign the platter whence its taste i sever.
attention, you who reckon with october:
the countdown wanes, but wisdom reigns, forever.
