Unfettered

A dose of truth, beyond belief,
always stings a bit at first
to cap our lost innocence grief
when the daydream bubble is burst.

We double down into reason
when our unicorns have died...
slain by duplicitous treason
when circumstance would not abide.

It's tough to have a go at life
from deep within a silk cocoon
guarding from Heraclitean strife
or crude and insolent buffoon.

Could be but for the grace of god,
or what passes for her instead,
are thoughts by which our brains are shod...
that keep us from getting ahead.
