saXxy
“Every time I play my saxophone, I rediscover
a part of myself.”—Grover Washington, Jr
him used to blow di blouse an skirt off girls
who come dung in dem fancy suits an curls
fi listen him play thorny saxophone
an then beg fi go home wid him alone.
di blinkin light dem spook di discotheque,
casting grim shadows pon di upper deck
paintin gyratin hips wid sexy beat
like phantoms dat could not keep off dem feet.
him lie dung pon him back an kiss di horn
like when a baby set up to be born
di first day when di mumma kiss di dad
an merge conception pon di launchin pad.
him used to blow di daylights out of fame
fi serenade di nimble an di lame,
but neva stop fi ponder bout di time
when saxxy charm would not bring home a dime.
him instrument can’t woo no one no more,
him broken reed crestfallen pon di floor:
to flatulate di face of temperance
meck life look like a blinkin sightless glance.
