Beneath It All

In the quiet corners where shadows play,
I whisper softly, “It’s fine, I don’t care,”
Yet beneath the surface, emotions sway,
A storm brews, hidden in the air.

With a smile painted bright, I wear my mask,
“Everything’s perfect,” I etch every line,
But in the stillness, I silently ask,
“Why does this heart ache, if all is so fine?”

I stroll through the echoes of laughter and light,
While the weight of the world rests heavy on me,
“I’m carefree,” I play, like a bird in flight,
Yet each fluttering wing longs to be free.

The world spins its stories, a dance of pretense,
“Look at me thriving,” I shout to the skies,
But deep in the night, when I ponder the tense,
I find the truth hidden behind my own lies.

So here in the silence, I lay my heart bare,
“It’s fine, I don’t care,” is my fragile refrain,
For deep down I know, in the depths of despair,
I care more than ever, in laughter and in pain.

Author's Note
The world moves too fast to notice there's a crack in the glass.
Too many of us paint happy faces and stories, driven out of control with the aid of the age of social media (which I loathe).
"Fake it until you make it" is a line as old as time...but, one we constantly get hoodwinked on.
All writing remains the property of the author. Don't use it for any purpose without their permission.
