A Scar to Be Cherished

To know kindness, grasp first
the stark void of losing all
that is dear.

Our hoarded treasures,
our carefully counted coins, lie useless
and abandoned at death's door.

Tonight's fervent embrace
is wonderful as we touch,
flesh on flesh in desperation,

grasping for significance,
even while tasting the salty
tart of life’s sweetest orgasm.

Let us remember that this too,
will one day be left behind
in the forfeiting hands of time.

To truly know love, let us
stare down the grim truth
of death, accepting our ends,

and the loss of those we cherish.
In acceptance, we will enter
the giddy joys of this rapid release,

unfixed in time as a wound
that will never heal,
and a scare to be cherished.
