Generation Why
Conceived on the eve of the passage
Of one generation to another
Right at the birth of a golden age
But this is merely fool’s gold
Raised to believe fairy tales are fact
And peace is only a hear beat away
But the peace is flat lining now
Cardiac arrest of Cinderella
Watched what I didn’t know
Fall down in slow motion on the tv
That’s where things changed
And my innocence was buried in the rubble
Suddenly, it picks up speed, like a train
Elementary coincides with security
One more war to add to the history books
Never knew what the fuss was all about
Puberty hits like a tidal wave onto a levee
Breaks it all apart, waters drown the childhood
Attraction strikes, never thought of you that way
But that was before you grew a pair
Days become blacker as the war drags on
And the realization that loneliness kills
Like cancer, slow and painful, such irony
Then I know what it actually means
Like wallstreet, I crash into new surroundings
Never even got a chance to say farewell to prosperity
In the background, trying to hide from everything
But my face is becoming more and more clearer
Yet another jump in time; was I sleeping through it?
Four years and all the baggage that comes with it
Broken hearts and minds, but everything’s fine
But history is being made, and I can’t see it happening
Time for change, but change was too late
All the while, the desert is on fire
Revolution caught on camera, technological age raging
But I’m still stuck in the stone age
And then, all of it slows down, even if it’s a trick of the mind
Sitting here, trying to process what has been
Hopefully, I’m not the only one in this generation
Simply asking myself “why?”
Of one generation to another
