The Beach

Did you know that if you drill a vertical foxhole
from the marble backstreets of Lisbon
through molten rock
to the underside of the earth
then slide down, feet first
turns out you’ll reach the Kapiti coast
In the middle of New Zealand
Crazy huh?

I’d recommend tossing down some
tinned sardines, fresh clams,
baby buttered snails
and semi-aerated green wine
As take-home mementos of Portugal

Then drive a jeep
to an undisclosed beach location
climb up to the Iberian coastline
traverse the grey sand steps
made with rungs of drift wood
Follow the long and lazy hot diamond skyline
looking for Lucy and your lover
They are both waiting for you

Watch as you entirely lose yourself
In the arms of oceanic boundlessness
in exactly the right place
with everything perfectly upside down
and gold sequinned fabric
gathering in folds
wrapping the sand dunes
with a shivery spindrift of salt-fizz
pinching at your feet and skin

He’s here with me
in the water
anchoring me
taking me on a trip
pulling me from the rips
Offering me a fresh perspective of the world

I’m so grateful

Liberating
Invigorating
Heavenly

Why would I ever want to stop?
