see great scenery
redeeming feature
talk of modern trains
like Europe and Asia

Smokey Robinson playing
tracks of my tears
Amtrak derailments
frequent as my thoughts
both aging systems

Few things have torn into the environment like automobiles and their supporting infrastructure.
I also much prefer that choo-choo sound to any car noise.

The train from Portland to Bellingham, or Vancouver BC is amazing. You can practically dip your hand in Puget Sound if you're on the left side.
Good point about cars. It's not just the infrastructure, but the pollution. People all over Phoenix commuting 40 miles each way to work. We do have light rail here, but it needs to expand.

My father had a ton of train magazines and I recall while looking though them there was always something about wanting to make improvements to Amtrak and the hurdles they had to jump over to get something done.

Dear PD,
For me, this piece conjured up some fond memories of train travel. Sure, there were delays and messier cars and breakdowns etc. over others but the relaxed way of travel is what I recall over the bother. Great write. H🌷

Thanks, H. I have many fond train memories too. I would love to do a short Amtrak Vistaliner trip. Just relax and take in scenery.
