What Have I Become
I was once smaller,
I had big green eyes,
Round flushed cheeks.
I was so soft,
I breathed cleaner air,
I had clearer dreams.
My mother looked at me with affection,
My father looked at me with expectation,
I looked fresh and smooth.
As the years passed some of the dirt and sticks I walked through on my journey clung to me,
Rocks and spines pricked my skin,
The blood did not dry.
It stuck around.
I got bigger,
Anger filled glares,
Bruised knuckles and black eyes.
I am sharp,
I have wordless days,
I have unclear thoughts.
I didn't care that I had changed,
I didn't want to be a child anymore.
Until one day,
In a moment of rage I stepped forward,
The air became still and the world was quiet.
Because my mother put her hand up in defense,
She looked at me with fear.
I had big green eyes,
Round flushed cheeks.
I was so soft,
I breathed cleaner air,
I had clearer dreams.
My mother looked at me with affection,
My father looked at me with expectation,
I looked fresh and smooth.
As the years passed some of the dirt and sticks I walked through on my journey clung to me,
Rocks and spines pricked my skin,
The blood did not dry.
It stuck around.
I got bigger,
Anger filled glares,
Bruised knuckles and black eyes.
I am sharp,
I have wordless days,
I have unclear thoughts.
I didn't care that I had changed,
I didn't want to be a child anymore.
Until one day,
In a moment of rage I stepped forward,
The air became still and the world was quiet.
Because my mother put her hand up in defense,
She looked at me with fear.
