Soubi

It was supposed to be you and I, wasn't it?
another treasure lost in the void of obliviance
I overlooked our symmetry from the parallel
understanding slips as sand between fingers

you were plucking at a guitar on the cabin porch
of that religious campground each summer
and I'd hang around to keep your attention
a cool tough guy for a sheltered girl like me

you slid like a key into the darkest part of me
the caged animal too afraid to leave its prison
all the nights spent impulsively from the backseat
a thousand flickers of a bittersweet remembrance

oh, beautiful boy, you came as a Roman
icy eyes like fire stealing breath from my chest
your teeth in my shoulder holding me closer
the sweat dripping down the ink on your pelvis

do you remember sneaking into my window?
you were everything I have become
the night we spent drinking coffee on my patio
resisting the compulsion to come undone

you were the one
a realization I'm far too late to overcome
and we've both moved on
but sometimes you're all I can think about
