Next Steps to Growth.
Next steps to growth.
Constance came back from her excursion having found another two Vampires that would need accommodating for a daily feed when they finished the completion phase.
She had already called Ryan to use Penny until we could find another donor to assist with our growing tribe.
She had already got them to agree that coming to the mansion for a short while would be preferable, as while we had space, there was a concern that they lived within a couple of miles of a vampire hunter and leaving them with no support would not be anything more than a distraction.
Ebenezer had been after Constance for almost all of his life. His sister had been subdued and was totally drained one evening when she was walking home from the Lutheran church they attended.
The vampire who overpowered and drank her blood was not an intelligent nor was he a powerful man but someone who heard her screams saw a caped shadow fly into the sky, reported this to the church head. As flying was linked firmly to witches this became the de facto person to go after and one of their neighbours had professed to being a follower of Wicca and she was chased down the street by an angry crowd of Lutherans.
Luckily Constance knew of her as she had a great knowledge of herbs, they became friends and as she ran to her home Constance had just arrived to collect some herbs and fronted the crowd and explained she grew herbs which made a lot of potions that were well known in the medical world for their healing properties.
Ebenezer was not convinced and decided to follow Constance and see where she lived.
Constance was actually on the way to the real culprit to confront him and explain that his actions were going to cause a major problem.
“You really have created a monster in our midst,” she told him “Were you not advised of the danger from the local church who are singularly anti anyone who lives in their vicinity?”
“Why should that worry me?” He replied with no remorse or even the intelligence that he was born with.
“Who turned you?” She asked him.
“Is that any of your business?” he riposted.
Constance knew better than he about the local community and decided his was a dangerous and selfless attitude, so she grabbed him and ripped his throat out. He was taken by surprise and she had no problem and flew off below rooftop height for the next few turns until she could gain some altitude and see if Ebenezer was still in the locale.
He was just getting to the end of the ex-vampire’s street and went into the open front door to find the dead vampire.
He reported this as a vampire attack which the police took very little notice of as he was obsessed with vampires even though there was plenty of agreement that his sister had puncture wounds in her neck and was devoid of any blood when the autopsy published its results in front of the coroners’ court. This never dissuaded Ebenezer from continuing his hunt for Constance and her friendship with the Wicca follower but when she met Constance, they were miles away or even at Constance mansion.
The two new guys welcomed this and assured Constance they would find a donor as soon as they could. Meanwhile Penny said when they had confirmed their full conversion, she would give them access to her blood until they could get their own source. She also teased them with her elfin figure and spent time teaching them the rudiments of production of the elixir and taught them about the various sources of the rarer herbs.
Aubrey rang Dirk to confirm that Theodore would be arriving in a couple of days and was looking forward to meeting him. He apologised that he could not introduce them himself as he was off to his vineyard in Italy to oversee the harvest in the next few weeks.
Dirk asked if he could visit sometime and get more information about the family history. He had already broached the subject with Constance who had not visited Aubrey’s vineyard for several decades and was hoping that this year was promising to be a vintage year.
Theo flew in on a Friday early evening and suggested they all take some transport to the local watering hole and booked a table before he left from Haiti. The pub was crowded but we were seated in a side area of the covered verandah. The sommelier had opened several bottles of Ryan’s latest release of a two-year-old Cabernet to breath before we arrived. He knew this particular red was as tasty as he had ever sampled, and all agreed with his knowledgeable palate.
Seated between Theo and Constance Dirk took the opportunity to ask Theo about his work.
“Did you find any correlation between voodoo and vampire history?” he asked Theo.
“Well not a lot of direct similarities because of the semi religious nature of their beliefs,” he replied, “as we discounted most god-based beliefs being due to ignorance of how vampires are viewed.”
“I know that vampires are atheists or agnostic as a belief in god is opposite to being capable of eternal life. Only accidents or deliberate hate crimes, which are the opposite of religious teachings, can cause a vampire to cease to exist. That, for me, will only not show that zombies and voodoo cannot be allied to vampires nor can they explain how zombies work.” Dirk said.
“Very true and I cannot see any corollary myself,” Theo responded, “but the only explanation is the sad but true belief that Haitians have in how voodoo works. I have yet to discover the secret of belief as a construct.”
“We should put our heads together and review my findings together with other matters that you need to know about.” Theo said.
“Will you be staying with us or do you need any lab equipment?” Dirk asked.
Constance butted into the conversation and said, “As fascinating as your conversation I am sure you find it to be, we are here to talk about anything rather than work matters.”
Both Theo and Dirk apologised for boring the table.
The meal was, as ever, well cooked, presented and delicious. The talk turned to how much fishing and watersports had Theo enjoyed while in Haiti.
Theo turned out to be less interested in watersports or fishing but as a sub aqua diver he regaled them with the fact that he was a backer of Jacques Cousteau and accompanied him often, not just on dives but also as a cameraman for some of the filming used in Cousteau’s TV work and other dives in the Caribbean for his own production company.
They finished with a dessert from one of the chef’s favourite compadres dessert menus. An apple that was crafted from a sugar construction enclosing an ice cream so delicate that when you placed it in your mouth it was like eating fog.
They returned to the mansion and continued the talk of Theo’s history and later retired to their various rooms.
