Chambermaid's Lament

The heart is
                       a spoiled child
Making demands
     of weary parents
Throwing foot stomping tantrums
                                   in skipping patterns
As if heartbeats
                 know a thing
About the tangled web
                of the creature
                          called us
And this
                         chloroform soaked existence
Where even the mind
                                      shuts
                                                 d
                                                   o
                                                     w
                                                        n
In order for survival
While this
       thumping child
                                 rants
About such trivial things
               as love
So selfishly insistent
It will have
                      what it wants
