Things That Go Bump...
they hear a sound
something unusual
they go out the door
into the dark to see
living
a lifetime of safety
accustomed
to things that make sense
something goes
bump in the night
something
threatening the usual order
going out into the dark
not to find
something
but
to find
nothing
going out into the dark
to prove
there is no burglar
no peeping tom in the bushes
no psycho with chainsaw
no werewolf or vampire
how else to go on
on to the next moment and the next
without knowing for certain
not going out into the dark
not looking
would mean
permanent paralysis
fearing
to take even one more breath
part of them believes
nothing is out there
couldn’t be
things like this
just don’t happen
they need to know
it isn’t happening now
if they don’t prove
that nothing is out there
they would
start screaming
and never stop

I can’t stand horror movies, mostly for that reason.
No lie… a few weeks ago I heard someone knocking on my window in the middle of the night and I huddled under the covers and ignored it. When it wouldn’t go away, I tip toed to another window and peeped out very slowly through the curtains. It was a friend that was locked out of the apartment building and didn’t have his phone. It scared the hell out of me. I’d much rather not know, but it wouldn’t stop!
