Don't Blink
He sits there in the tall grass,
against a pitch-black sky,
dressed in an old plaid shirt,
he’s just an ordinary guy.
He wears those ugly green camo pants,
the ones I really hate,
worn-out old slippers,
new ones would be great.
He stares at me never blinking,
listening to my every word,
watching me intently,
he’s more than I deserve.
I stop talking for a moment,
and I never see him blink,
it’s silent now between us,
as I wonder what he thinks.
I hear him say, “I love you.”
and at times I wonder why,
again he never blinks,
he just stares up at the sky.
I know I need to say it,
but I sometimes wonder why,
blinking back my tears,
I can’t let him see me cry.
