the whispered word

“For it was not into my ear you whispered, but into my heart. Itwas
not my lips you kissed, but my soul.”—Judy Garland

the silence, still, is undisturbed,
          when sotto voce tones
the wayward word has gently curbed,
                              before it jars the bones.
                                        vexations to the spirit bear
                                                  the crudely contoured chasms
that bump and grind across the ear
                                                                      like intellectual spasms.
o feed me with thy cooling balm
                                                            of lullabies and croons,
that i may keep my spirit calm
                                        on pleasant afternoons!
come whisper to my bleeding heart,
                    perchance your healing touch
may mend that which is torn apart
when lexemes prate too much.
