Gift of Our Humanness

His eyes sparkled
like those of a boy
on Christmas morning
as my practiced fingers
led him into my warmth.

Feeling him find his home,
I heard a long sigh and thought,
What a wonderful gift we share!
To be fully human for
even an hour in this life.

Author's Note
Sometimes poems are like reference points in life. I was reading one of my poems from January and remembered my lover's eyes which inspired this short write. The January poem was Strange Thoughts While Making Love. Illustration is edited from a photo my mother took of me and a lover in Dallas seven months ago.
