The Devil I Befriended
when I was younger
my mother always told me
friends are meant to lift you up
not drag you down
I honestly never put so much as a thought into it
at least not until recently
when I found myself
being drug six feet under
by the devil I so foolishly befriended
hes got this hold on me
when he goes down
I go down
when he falls
I fall
when he breaks
I break
he's tied a chain to my ankle
the other end attached to his
and anytime I start to climb my way
back to the surface
to the fresh air
the sunny skies
and the chirping birds
grabbing at the hands of those
who try to pull me up
he yanks me back down
until I tumble deeper than before
there's no escaping it
there's no escaping him
but sometimes when he leaves
the most beautiful angels
fly down to rescue me
until he finds me once more
and relinks our bodies
but when he does
I'm still met with hope
that those angels won't leave
but will watch from the trees
waiting to set me completely free
my mother always told me
friends are meant to lift you up
not drag you down
I honestly never put so much as a thought into it
at least not until recently
when I found myself
being drug six feet under
by the devil I so foolishly befriended
hes got this hold on me
when he goes down
I go down
when he falls
I fall
when he breaks
I break
he's tied a chain to my ankle
the other end attached to his
and anytime I start to climb my way
back to the surface
to the fresh air

and the chirping birds
grabbing at the hands of those
who try to pull me up
he yanks me back down
until I tumble deeper than before
there's no escaping it
there's no escaping him
