The Sum of These Parts

Do we carry a soul on this journey through life or
does human consciousness trick us into thinking
we’re more than we are?

Maybe “the soul” evolved as a strategy of self-preservation?
The humans who believed in the immortality of the soul
lived more carefully, or not.

I think the soul is a mental fabrication.
We’re only the sum of these physical parts,
beautiful though they are.

That the sum of these physical parts evolved to the
point of having conscious thought is a miracle and
something to be thankful for, or not.

Knowing these physical parts that tremble with ecstasy
will remember this night until my death is a wonderful gift
with a pinch of immortality thrown in for good measure.
Oh, how rich and tasty is this life!
