Beautiful. I like that the author uses "kid." This emphasizes the feeling that the narrator is looking out for the subject. Also interesting how it ends with forever, when we know the kid won't be a kid forever. Maybe the "kid" will always be a kid to the narrator, no matter how much time passes.
